HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/20/2017 *oE sgoTy°�o RECEIVED APR 17 2017 Southold Town krlerl ANTI-BIAS TASK FORCE MEETING March 20, 2017 TOWN HALL PRESENT: Debra Riva, Eleanor Lingo,Jean LePre,Valerie Shelby,Susan Dingle,Cindy Smith Loretta Hatzel Geraci, Carolyn Peabody and Chief Flatley. Guests: David Shultz, Howard Brodis, Margaret deCruz,Claire Dowling EXCUSED: Linda Ruland and Marjorie Day The ABTF recognizes it's members who have been honored in the Suffolk Times in recent weeks,Valerie Shelby Sonia Spar and Chris North. 1. There is a motion to approve the minutes from February. All are in favor. 2. Synergy event is scheduled for April 6, 2017 at the Human Resource center in Mattituck. 3. Committee members Jean LePre, Eleanor Lingo, Carolyn Peabody and Nydia Portillo have turned in their paperwork for reappointment. 4. There is conversation re: Unity pride parade and festival which will be in June. Two people are trying to organize this event to be held in June. (Jim Shaw and Ann Trimble) Their goal is to create awareness of unity in our communities and their hope is to join the Greenport festival and the ABTF picnic on August 12. There is a suggestion to invite them to our planning committee for the picnic event. 5. Some of the artwork that students have done has been displayed on Channel 22. Our next Helen Prince award program will be on October 5, 2017. f: 6. Carolyn announces there is an ongoing effort to promote civility and respect. The Hispanic community has a reluctance of doing Cinco de Mayo this year due to fear of deportation. Efforts to educate the community,will be ongoing. A bumper sticker has been developed and discussion is that at every event we have we will distribute as well as communicate our choice of respect and civility. 7. Lynn Nyalisl(Youth Bureau)wants to have youth read our donated books from our Frank Lepre donations (MLK celebration). Books and letters will go out to the schools. 8. NEW BUSINESS: Police have been in training. There is a new policy for dealing with undocumented. A rewrite in immigration is coming;may have information by the SYNERGY event. Southold Town will not be doing enforcement work for the government., Being undocumented is not a crime. It is a civil action. Re-entry can be a crime. Next meeting is on April 17, 2017 at 10am,Town Hall.
