The Board of Trustees of the Town of South-:
old, in the County of Suffolk and State of
New York, for grants of land under water :
at Greenport, in said town, county and :
state .
To the Trustees of the said Tovit7 of Solxthold
and t o the said George J. Brown and William G. Robinson,
respectively:
The undersigned, residents of the said village of
Greenport individually and collectively now and at all
Z
times reserving to themselves all'manner of benefit and
advantage of exception -,and objection to the said applica-
tion of George J. Brown and William G. Robinson respective-
ly for the grant of the above mentioned grant of li.nd
'waters and to the power of the said Board of Trustees of
the Town of Southold to make such grants,
Res,,ectfully show:
First ® That Sterling Street, or Old Sterling Road,
as it is called in the said application, is practically
the only shore drive and roadway for vehicles and ]edesm
trians now left to the inhabitants of this village of Gree d
port , frcm -which they may view the marine beauties of our
_
h arbor.
Second - Business encroa.ch.n:ents have already
destroyed many of the opportunities formerly possessed
by the inhabitants of this village to enjoy the advantages
justly due to them along the shores of Sterling Harbor
and Peconic Bay.
Third o The undersigned are informed and believe
that the present applicants--,would derive no material
advantage by obtaining their said grants as they now have
their possessory rights by reason of their ownership;
and the undersigned are informed and believe that the said
applicants have now the right as riparian owners to e rest
private docks without a grant, and the undersigned are
also informed and believe that there is still a doubt in
the minds of many of the inhabitants of this town a s to
whether the trustees have a valid right to make such grant
as applied for.
TITEERErORE we the undersigned, do most. respectfully
submit our objections to the granting of the lands under
the waters of Sterling Harbor, along said. Sterling Street,
for the €,hove mentioned reasons, and further because
the rights of cit mens should be caref>>lly protected and the
village of Greenport should preserve its natural beauties
thus promoting its present prosperity and future growth;
and we therefore respectfully submit that we seriously-
object to the granting of lands under the waters adjacent
to Sterling Street in the said village of Greenport.
