Economic Development Committee Meeting January 20, 2017
Town Hall Conference Room
In Attendance: Sara Garretson, Steve Latham, John McLane, Denis Noncarrow, Rona Smith,
Councilman William P. Ruland
Excused: Donielle Cardinale, Supervisor Scott Russell, John Stype
Meeting called to order at 3:30 p.m.
Minutes from the December meeting are approved.
Strategic Operating Draft: Denis and Sara created a draft in an effort to document what the EDC
discussed in the past year. The Committee is going to read through the booklet in its entirety.
Plum Island: The committee discussed Plum Island and agreed to keep it on the radar. Deputy
Supervisor Ruland explained that Plum Island is zoned to be privatized, and is research and
wildlife zoned. The committee is going to wait and see what happens then reach out and offer
help and go before Town Board.
As referenced in the previous minutes the Committee is going to go back to the Chambers and
discuss current concerns with business owners and see how they are dealing with these issues
(wages, transportation, etc.). The Committee is going to keep constant contact with the
Chambers, create a relationship, and have regular attendance at meetings.
Rona is going to look into the zoning code. Many of the uses that are needed by businesses today
are not in the code as they were not thought of or needed then.
Sara is going to attend an informal meeting about the Capital One building in regards to being
used as a food hub.
John McLane will be emailing a draft of his Guide for Doing Business in Southold Town for all
Committee members to review. John is going to have a meeting with Mark Terry and Denis in
regards to his guide.
