Box 1179 Southold,New York 11971 ct a ate, R €�;.VED OCT 17 2016 ANTI-BIAS TASK FORCE � COMMITTEE MEETING $OUi vi i`'J1iP1 ( � AUGUST 15, 2016 The meeting was called to order at 10:10 a.m. by Co-chairpersons, Sonia Spar and Valerie Shelby. Members present were: Marjorie Day, Loretta Hatzel-Geraci, La'Roy Heyliger, Jean LePre, Eleanor Lingo, Christopher North, Carolyn Peabody, Linda Ruland, Valerie Shelby, Cynthia Smith and Sonia Spar. Chief Flatley, Town of Southold Police Department, William Ruland, Liaison from the Town Board and Denis Noncarrow, Liaison from Supervisor Russell's office were also present. Absent members were: Susan Dingle, Louise Hug, Nydia Portillo and Debra Riva. 1) Cindy Smith moved to accept the minutes with one correction-The Helen Prince Award will be held on October 6m Loretta seconded it. The motion carried. 2) The Unity Picnic was discussed. Some suggestions and thoughts were as follows: 1) A letter to the Southold Fire Department should be written stating how we missed them and hopefully they will be there next year. 2) The turnout was great. Also there was wonderful cooperation from the town workers. 3) Having another fundraiser was mentioned. 4) Possibly moving the picnic to September. 5) The location was perfect. 6) The barbecue pit (cooking) should be moved to the other side of the tent, away from all the people working to and from their cars. 7) There should be more donations from the businesses for the raffle. 8) Eleanor's church received the leftover food. 9) The picnic committee will meet to discuss thoughts for next year. 10) There should be more ethnic food. 11) Valerie suggested thank you certificates. 12) A$20.00 donation was received from Phil's Auto. 13) Restructure the work force to two people per function and define their duties. There should be one main person in charge of all of the food. 3) There will be an Information Seminar on Civil Service Exams on September 2nd from 7—9 pm. Denis is working with Lloyd on this. Fliers need to be put up around town. A meeting will be held on August 24th at 10 am at the NF Parish Outreach Office to discuss. 4) Synergy Event-October 20th—time to be announced. Christopher North will let us know the details. 5) Helen Prince Award-A committee meeting will be held on August 29th at 10 am to discuss. Chris will design the flier. Marjorie is getting a biography on Merle Levine. 6) School Reports- No reports. Sonia will send a letter to the school representatives to try to engage our students and youth. 7) Police Department-The two mutual combatants at the Carnival were talked to and their parents were involved as well. The graffiti at Southold High School was cleaned up too quickly for any identification to take place. 8) Susan Toman has offered two tickets to the Starfish Ball on August 25th. Loretta and Sonia met with Susan concerning the complaint about the children at Founder's Landing this summer. Val and Sonia met with the director and it was felt that there were several miscommunications. They will work together with the group so that this doesn't happen again. 9) Marjorie invited everyone to the African American Museum's Late Summer Jamboree on August 21St from 2 to 4 pm in Southampton. 10) Ueda reported that with Valerie's approval, she delivered a large basket of goodies to the Southold Town Police Department with a note thanking them for all they do to protect us in Southold Town. It was very well received. 11) Sonia reminded all committee members that if they hear of incidents of bias and racism that they need to bring them to the committee. 12) La'Roy Heyliger reported that Rev. Dr. Marvin Dozier is working with the Town to honor Butch Lynch Jr. with a plaque somewhere on Factory Avenue. He will bring more information to the next meeting. Marjorie Day motioned to adjourn the meeting. Loretta seconded it. The meeting was adjourned at 11:25. Our next Anti-Bias Committee Meeting will be on Monday, September 19th at 10 am.
