SPECIFICATIONS FORd016 REPAIR& INSTALL. SIDEWALKS
SECTION •1.0--GENERAL
1.1 SCOPE
Under this Contract, the Contractor shall construct sidewalks, curbs and all
incidentals at various Town locations designated by the Superintendent of
Highways.
The work to be performed under this Contract shall include all labor, materials,
equipment, services and incidentals required to perform the proposed work as
indicated on the Details and as directed by the Superintendent of Highways,
Any reference made to items not specifically described herein shall mean as
described in the State of New York Department of Transportation Standard
Specifications dated January 2, 1985 or latest revision thereof,
1.2 MOB1LIZATiON
` The Contractor shall provide all labor, materials, equipment and services
necessary to mobilize the necessary equipment and materials to perform the
intended work.
Materials and equipment required for the performance of the work may be stored
at the sites only at locations and for periods of time as approved by the
j Superintendent of Highways.
i 1.5 PUBLIC UTILITIES AND SERVICES
The Utility Companies shall be notified by the Contractor in accbrdance:with
Section 1918 of the Penal Law of the State of New•York and Article 20, Section
322-a of the New York State General Business Law, entitled, "Construction or
Blasting Near Pipes Conveying Combustible Gas", which states, "the person
having direction or control of such works shall ascertain whether there is within
one hundred feet in such street, highway or public place, any pipe conveying
combustible gas.
This Contractor and all other excavations must comply with Industrial Code Part
53 whereby this Contractor must obtain the list of each operator of underground
facilities and provide advanced ndtice to each operator his intent to perform
I excavation in the area specified under this Contract.

All conduits, sewers, storm drains, water mains, underground electric and
telephone conductors or conduits, or gas mains encountered in the construction
shall be properly and safety taken care of by the Contractor, who shall, upon
encountering the same, notify the public corporation to whom they, belong, in
order that they may be changed in such a manner as not to Interfere with the final
construction if it Is impossible to cross over, under or around the other utility.
In case any damage shall result in any service pipe for water.,,gas or any private
or public sewer or conduit,the Contractor shall, without delay, and at his own
expense, repair the same to-the satisfaction of the Superintendent of Highways,
and in case such repairs are not made promptly or satisfactorily, the Owner may
have the repairs made by another contractor, or otherwise, and deduct the cost
of same from any monies due or to become due the Contractor.
1.6 LINE AND GRADE
i All items of work shall be installed to the lines and grades specified or as
modified by the Superintendent of Highways.
The Contractor shall do all stakeout, layout and elevations necessary to perform
the intended construction. Surveying shall be performed'by competently
qualified personnel acceptable to the Superintendent of Highways. All
instruments, equipment,'stakes and any other material necessary to pe6rm this
work satisfactorily shall be provided by the Contractor and approved by the
Superintendent of Highways.

The Superintendent of Highways or his representative shall have the right to stop
all work at any time If, In his opinion, inspfficlent'stalceout is being maintained.
All work shall be laid out from control points and bench marks as indicated on the
Plans and/or as supplied by the Superintendent of Highways.
1.7 GLEA UP
The Contractor shall at all times keep the construction area, including storage
areas used by him, free from accumulation of waste materials and rubbish and
prior.to completion of work, remove'any rubbish,from•and about the premises,
Upon completion of"a miorking day,the Contractor shall leave wont and
premises In a clean; neat and workmanlike'condition satisfactory to the
Superintendent of Highways.

1.8 GENERAL MOTES
1, Any trench, pit or other excavation that is open and unattended shall be
protected as directed by the Superintendent of Highways with fences, barricades,
or other approved method, No direct payment will be made for this work.
2. The Contractor is cautioned to avold disturbing any existing fencing, hedges,
walks, etc., that are adjacent to the construction site, The cost of repairing or
replacing any such disturbed areas, as ordered by the Superintendent of
Highways, will beat the Contractor's own expense,
3, Surveys for line and grade for pipe, structures, and retention area will be the
responsibility of the Contractor, Vertical and horizontal control points will be
established and furnished to the Contractor prior to the start of the work,,
4. The Contractor's attention is directed to the existence of property line
markers, pipes, monuments, stakes, etc,, that fall on or near the existing property
and/or road boundaries. These markers are to be retained, in the event these
markers are removed, broken, or otherwise destroyed by the Contractor; they
shall be replaced by the Contractor at his,expense with markers of-equal size
i and,quality.

5, All fire hydrants within or adjacent to the construction limits,shall be kept and
! maintained.readily accessible to fire apparatus at all times. No obstruction shall
be placed within fifteen (15) feet of any such hydrant.

8, It is,the Contractor's responsibility to verify all utility locations,
7, The Contractor is cautioned not to disturb any trees adjacent to*his
construction without written permission from the Superintendent of Highways. In
the event that the trees are endangered,the Contractor will take all precautions
to protect them, as directed by the Supbrintendent of Highways, Payment for
any necessary work inclpding supporting, painting, etc,, but excluding sheathing,
are to be included in the various dontract items,
8, All signs within,contract limits which may require to be temporarily shifted to a
nearby location as ordered by the Superintendent of Highways shall,be Installed
back permanently at the original positions before completion of'the Job.
9. It is*the Town of Southampton's Intentions to utilize the various items of this
contract to remove existing concrete curbing and sidewalk and replace same with
! handicap curb cuts in accordance with the requirements of the American
Disability Act. The quantities for the proposed up-grade shall be directed by the
Superintendent bf Highways and be paid for Lased on the unit price(s) bid per ;
' items shown in the Proposal Form, '

1.9 PAYMENT
Payment(s) made under this Contract will'be made on the basis.of the actual
work completed In accordance with the Contract-Documents, Paymdnts will be
computed from the unit prlce(s) bid, payment will only be made for the items
shown in the Proposal. No separate payment-wiil,be made for:rnobllization,
bonds, insurance, etc. Contractor is advised to Include-such"costs'in;the unit
price(s) bid.
1.10 Maintenance& C�roteotion of Traffic
The cost for this Item shall be included in all Items of this Contract, The
Contractor shall-be responsible for providing Maintenance and Protection of
Traffic and flagmen In,accordance with the Details, Specifications and/or as,
directed by the Superintendent of Highways. The Contractor must Include
Maintenance& Protection ofTraffie in the bid price of all items.

2,2 CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
The Contractor shall saw cut the existing sidewalk to establish a straight line
where new work abuts existing, The saw cut shall,be full depth to enable the
sidewalk to be removed leaving,a straight,edge. Sidewalks that are removed
i leaving a ragged edge shall be re-cut and replaced at the Contractor's expense.
' Adjacent sidewalk to be left In place which Is undermined, moved or damaged
past the saw cut line during the excavation operation will be removed and
replaced at the Contractor's expense,
The Contractor shall not demolish or remove any parts of existing sidewalk
unless said area is to receive new finished sidewalk within 24 hours,
1 The Contractor shall remove and dispose off-site all old concrete and debris in an
approved manner. No stockpiling on site will be permitted after a working day.

The unit price bid for this item shall be the number of square feet of sidewalk
removed to the satisfaction of the Superintendent.of Highways. The unit price
per square foot shall include saw cutting, all labor,materials, equipment and.
Incidentals necessary to remove existing sidewalks and properly dispose of it off
site according to the Details, Specifications and/or as ordered by the
Superintendent of Highways..
*NOTE: In the event the unit price bid for Item 1A Is greater than item 1 B, as
Indicated in the itemized Proposal, the Owner will substitute the unit price per
square,foot bid for Item 1B into Item 1A and make the necessary adjustments In
the Proposal Form to determine the total',amount of the bid.
SECTION 3.0
Itern 2- REMOVE EXISTING CURB
3.1 DESCRIPTION
Under this Item, the Contractor shall saw cut and remove existing sidewalk of
any kind in accordance with the Details, Specifications and/or as directed by the
i Superintendent of Highways.
3.2 CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
The Contractor shall saw out the'existing sidewalk to establish a straight line

SECTION 4.0
item 3- CONCRETE CURB FORCED BID ITEM)
4.1 DESCRIPTION
Under this Item, the Contractor shall construct a conventionally formed concrete
curb in accordance with the Details, Specifications and/or as directed by the
Superintendent of Hlghways. The construction of the concrete curbs shall meet
the requirements of the New York State Department of Transportation Standard
Specifications of January 2, 1985, as amended for Item 609.04 Conventionally
Formed or Machine Formed Concrete Curb except as herein modified.
4.2 MATERIALS
The,materials shall meet the requirements of the following subsections of Section
700 - Material:
Portland Cement 701-01
Fine Aggregates 703-01
Coarse Aggregates 703-02
Premolded Bituminous Joint Filler 705-07
i Wire Fabric For Concrete Reinforcement 709.02
' Polyethylene Curbing Covers 711-04
Water 712-01
The material requirements and composition shall comply with the Specification
for Class "A" concrete in Section 501-2 under"Portland Cement Concrete-
General"• Concrete shall be proportioned in accordance with the aggregate
weights specified for Class "A"concrete in Table 501-3, Cenc'rete Proportions.
4.3 CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
The curb shall be conventionally formed to the size and shape shown on the
Details or as directed by the Superintendent of Highways, Curbs shall not be
I poured monolithically'with the sidewalk unless otherwise directed by the
1 Superintendent of Highways.

i A. Casting Segments - Curb shall be cast in segments having a uniform length
of approximately 20 feet, Segments shall be se0arated by contraction scoring,
Contraction scoring shall be'/4"wide x 1"deep -'V shaped.

B, Expansion Joints-Expansion joints 4 inch in width shall be formed with
"Premolded Bituminous Joint Filler", Section 705-07 placed at twenty(20) foot
Intervals as shown on the Plans and specified by the Superintendent of
Highways, The filler material shall be cut'/" below top of the curb.
C. Forms - Forms shall be steel or wood, straight, free form warp, and of such —
construction that there will be no interference to inspection for grade or
alignment, All forms shall extend for the full curb depth and shall be braced and
secured adequately so that no displacement from alignment will occur during
placing of concrete.

D. Concrete Placing and Vibrating - Concrete shall be placed in the forms In
accordance with the applicable requirements of Section 555-$.04 and shall be
compacted with an approved immersion type mechanical vibrator. The vibrator
shall be of the size and weight capable of thoroughly vibrating the entire mass
without damaging or misaligning the forms and shall be approved by the
Superintendent of Highways. Forms shall be left in place for 24 hours or until the
concrete has sufficiently hardened, as determined by the Superintendent of
Highways, so that they can be removed without injury to the curb. Upon removal
of the forms, the exposed faces of the curb shall be immediately rubbed to a
uniform surface; Rubbing shall be accomplished by competent finishers. No
? plastering will be permitted.

E. Concrete Curing - Curing of the curb shall comply with the requirements of
i Section 502-3.10,-Curing. Minimum curing periods for the various types of curing
materials used shall comply with the requirements of Table 502-2.
F. Protection -The Contractor shall keep the curb clean, aligned and protected
from damage until final acceptance of the work. Any curb damaged prior to the
final acceptance of the work shall be repaired or replaced at the Contractor's
expense.,
4.4 METHOD OF MEASUREMENT
The quantity to be paid for under this Item shall be the linear feet of concrete —
r curb constructed to the approval of the Superintendent of Highways.

4,5 BASISOF PAYMENT

The unit price bid per linear foot shall include the cost of furnishing all labor,
materials,'equipment, excavation to bed the curb, backfill, pre-molded bituminous
joint filler, curing blankets, disposal of excess material and all other incidentals
necessary to complete the work in accordance to the Details, Specifications
and/or as ordered by the Superintendent of Highways.

NOTE: Item 3 -Concrete Curb shall be a Forced Bid Item.
The unit price for Item 3 shall not be less than $5.00 per linear foot, but may
exceed said $5.00 by any amount as determined by the bidder. In the event that
a unit price of less than $5.00 per linear foot is indicted In the Itemized Proposal
for Item 3, the Owner will substitute a unit price:; of$5,00 per linear foot and make
the necessary adjustment to determine the-total amount of the bid, -
SECTION 5.0
ITEM 4 CONCRETE SIDEWALKS (4"THICK)
6.1 DESCRIPTION
Under the Item, the Contractor shall construct a Portland cement concrete
sidewalk In accordance with the Details, Specifications and/or as directed by the
Superintendent of Highways, The construction of the concrete sidewalk shall
meet the requirements of the New York State Department of Transportation
Standard Specifications except as herein modified.
5.2 MATERIALS

for Class"A"cpncre.te in Section 501-2 under"Portland Cement Concrete -
Ge'neral". Concrete shall be proportioned in accordance with the aggregate
weights specified for Class "A"concrete in Table 501-3, Concrete Proportions.
B, Sand Bedding (Sub-grade)
The material for the sand bedding sub-grade shall meet the requirements
specified herein and consist of clean, hard, durable, uncoated particles,free from
lumps of clay and all deleterious substances.

The sand may be determined to be unacceptable sub-grade material if it contains
more than 10 percent by volume of loam or silt.
5,3 CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
The general construction details for manufacturing, transporting, and placing
concrete shall meet the requirements of Section 501, Portland Cement Concrete
General. Curing of concrete shall meet the requirements of Section 502,
Portland Cement Concrete Pavement, except as modified herein. The
Contractor shall excavate and remove all salts and materiais to a depth of eight
' inches (8") below the proposed finished elevation of top of new sidewalk.
! A sand beddjng sub-grade shall be compacted and graded,to a minimum depth
of four inches_(4+').
Concrete shall then be placed In one course four inches (4") in depth exbept
across driveways, when it shall be six(6")inches thick as directed by the
Superintendent of Highways,
Wire fabric for concrete reinforcement, Section 709-02, shall be embedded at
mid-depth in the slab.
The wire fabric shall consist of No, 6 gauge wire at 6 inch centers transversely
and longitudinally.
Transverse construction joints shall extend to the full depth of the slab and
spaced'20 to 25 feet apart as directed by the Superintendent of Highways.
The concrete surface shall be scored as shown on the details so that the finished
walk will be marked in squares, The concrete shall be worked and floated to
produce a smooth and uniform surface.
A pre-tnblded bituminous Jolht filler, Section 705-07, shall be installed at all joints
betweemsidewa€k and curb, pavement, build€ng,.etc,, as directed by the
Superintendent of Highways.
Handicapped sidewalk ramps shall be constructed as shown in the Details at _
locations determined by the Superintendent of Highways.

After the completion of sidewalk work, the Contractor shall cover the sidewalk
overnight during the first night of curing with a polyethylene cover or an equal to
the approval of the Superintendent of Highways.
New sidewalk area shall be barricaded using rope$,.horses,flagging,etc., in a
manner approved by the Superintendent of Highways to protect the,public during _
the curing period until the sidewalk is sufficiently cured to allow pedestrian traffic,
The Contractor shall protect the sidewalk and keep it,In first=class condition until
the completion of the Contract, Any portion of the sidewalk which is damaged or
vandalized at any'Urne previous to the,final acceptance of the work shall be
removed and replaced with satisfactory sidewalk at the Contractor's expense,
5.4 METHOD,QF MEASUREMI=IST
I The unit price bid for this Item shall be the number of square feet of concrete
sidewalk surface constructed to the approval of the Superintendent of Highways.
6.5 BASIS QF PAYMENT
The unit price bid per square foot shall include all excavation, preparation of sub-
grade including sand bedding,material, disposal of excess materials, wire fabric
for reinforcement, pre-molded bituminous Jo'int,filler, polyethylene cover,
' barricades, and all other incidentals necessary to complete the work in
accordance to the Details, Specifications and/or as ordered by the
Superintendent of Highways.
SECTION 6.0

6.1 DESCRIPTION

' Under the Item, the Contractor shall construct an integrally colored portland
cement concrete sidewalk In accordance with the Details, Specificatlons'and/or
as directed by the Superintendent of Highways.
The construction of the integrally colored concrete sidewalk shall meet the
requirements of the New York State Department of Transportation Standard
Specifications of January 2, 1985, as amended for Item 608-01 Concrete

6.2-MATERIALS,
A. Concrete Cament -
Materials shall meet the requirements of the following subsections of Section 700
Material:

Wire Fabric For Concrete Reinforcement 709-02

The material requirements and composition shall comply with the Specification
for Class "A"concrete in Section 501-2 under"Portland Cement Concrete-
i General Concrete shall be proportioned In accordance with the aggregate
weights specified for Class "A"concrete in Table 501-3, Concrete Proportions.
Admixture-for coloring shall be as manufactured by Davis Colors or an approved
° equal. Colors shall be selected by the Superlptendent of Highways. The
Contractor'shail furnish a color chart to the Superintendent of Highvdays for color
= selection.
The concrete cement shall have a minimum compressive strength of 3500 psi at
28 days,,
t B. Sand Sedding (Sub-grade)
The material for-the sand sub-grade shall meet the requirements of Section 5.213
Of this.specification.
i 6.3'CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
i The general construction details for manufacturing, transporting, and placing
concrete shall meet the requirements of Section 501, Portland Cement Concrete
- General, Curing of concrete shall meet the requirements of Section 602,
Portland Cement Concrete Pavement, except as modified herein.

A sand bedding sub-grade shall then be installed within the limits of area to
receive new integrally colored sidewalk and directed by the Superintendent of
Highways.
The sand sub-grade shall be compacted and graded to a minimum depth of four
inches (4").
The color admixture shall be integrally mixed according to manufacturer's
specifications,
The concrete shall be placed on the sand bedding sub-grade in one course four
inches (4") in depth except across driveways where It shall be six (6") thick as
directed by the Superintendent of Highways.
Wire fabric for concrete reinforcement, Section 709-02, shall be embedded at
mid-depth in the slab,

The wire fabric shall consist of No. 6 gauge wire at 6 inch centers transversely
and longitudinally.
Transverse construction joints shall extend to the full depth of the slab and
8 spaced 20 to 25 feet apart as directed by the Superintendent of Highways, The

New sidewalk area shall be barricaded using ropes, horses, flagging, etc., in a
manner approved•by the Superintendent of Highways to protect the public during
the curing period until the sidewalk is sufficiently cured to allow pedestrian traffic.
The Contractor shall protect the sidewalk and keep it in first-class condition until
the completion of the Contract. Any portion of the sidewalk which is damaged or
vandalized at any time previous to the final acceptance of the work shall be
removed and replaced with satisfactory sidewalk at the Contractor's expense.
6.4 METHOD OF MEASUREMENT
The unit price bid for this Item shall be the number of square feet of integrally
colored concrete sidewalk surface constructed to the approval of the
Superintendent of Highways.
6.5 BASIS OF PAYMENT
The unit price bid per square foot shall include all excavation, preparation of sub-
grade including sand bedding material, disposal of excess materials, wire fabric
for reinforcement, pre-molded bituminous joint filler, polyethylene cover,
barricades, and all other materials,*equipment and labor necessary to complete
the work to the satisfaction of the Superintendent of Highways.

7.1 DESCRIPTION
Under this Item, the'Contractor shall construct a Portland cement concrete
driveway apron and sidewalk in accordance with the Details, Specifications
and/or as directed by the Superintendent of Highways.
7.2 MATERIALS
Materials for the construction of the driveway apron with curb and curb cuts shall
meet the requirements of Section 5 Concrete Sidewalks of this Specification.
The concrete shall have a minimum compressive strength of 3500 psi at 28 days,

The construction details shall meet the requirements of Section 5 Concrete
Sidewalks except as herein modifled.

The concrete driveway aprons shall be constructed in accordance with the
Details, Specifications and/or as directed by the Superintendent of Highways.
The concrete for driveway apron shailbe placed Ione course six(6) inches in
depth over a four-inch (4")thick sand bedding as directed by the Superintendent
of Highways. Wire fabric for reinforcement shall consist of No. 6 gauge wire at 6-
inch centers transversely and longitudinally apart.
In the event concrete sidewalk is to be constructed to a depth of six inches(6")to
provide for a traffic bearing surface as directed by the Superintendent of
Highways, the cost of construction shall be paid for under this item.
7.4 METHOD OF MEASUREMMT

The quantity to be paid for under this item shall be the square foot area of the top
