SOUTHOLD TOWN ANTI-BIAS TASK FORCE-MINUTES 4/18/16

PRESENT: Cindy Smith, Loretta Hatzel-Geraci, Valerie Shelby, Sonia Spar, LeRoy Heyliger, Denis
Noncarrow, Linda Ruland, Chief Flatley and William Ruland
Christopher North is participating via conference call with Professor Banks
EXCUSED: Carolyn Peabody,Jean LePre, Marjorie Day
There is a motion to accept the minutes made by Valerie, LeRoy seconds all approve.
SYNERGY: The flyer is now available in English. Sonia will do them in Spanish. PDF will be available.
Superintendant Gamberg is on board and will be in attendance. The event is being announced at school
this AM in Southold and Greenport. LeRoy has left a message with Superintendant Ann Smith re: the
event.
Members will reach out to people in the community.
Sherriff-Suffolk Co police will be available at the event.
The committee reviews the event program.
POLICE: no report
SCHOOLS:
Oysterponds- no report
Greenport—Board had a discussion re: not using names for teacher coursework/salary increase. `
Questions are raised of whether volunteer baseball coach is acceptable.
Southold-met with Supt and principle to talk about many programs. Are they engaging students from
other schools. The robotics program has 1 student from outside Southold. They are working on
Aesthetics, engaging social worker,they are interested in eliminating bias and discrimination and to
engage kids as leaders.
New Suffolk-_no report
Fishers Island-Linda Ruland will reach out.
Mattituck-LeRoy has dropped of flyer for Synergy.
OLD BUSINESS: term positions are scheduled to change. Secretary to take minutes position is available
immediately.
NEW BUSINESS:
"UNDOCUMENTED"—Film can be shown on May 18 at6:00 at the Peconic School.We are trying to
provide diverse speakers. Community leaders will be invited to this event.
Erase Racism has a June 8 fundraising event dinner.
There is discussion re: reaching out to Human Development educator Tim Jahn from Cornell cooperative
extension as a possible speaker for our next Helen Prince Award ceremony.
PICNIC- Date is set for August 13, 2016. Suggestion to provide more kids activities is encourage.
Motion is made by Linda to adjourn at 11:30. LeRoy seconds. Allare in favor.
Next meeting is scheduled for May 16,2016 at 10am Town Hall.
