Southold Town Anti-Bias Task Force Minutes February 22, 2016
Excused:Val Shelby,Jean Le Pre, Susan Dingle, and Linda Ruland
Present: Sonia Spar, LeRoy Heyliger,William Ruland, Chief Flatley, Eleanor Lingo, Christopher North,
Cindy Smith and Carolyn Peabody 4
LeRoy makes a motion to accept the minutes. Chris seconds and all are in favor.
SYNERGY: The event will be held on April 28, 2016 at the Peconic Recreation Center.
Vendors for food should be local. Fruit is recommended due to the Jewish holiday.
Sonia will draft an invitation letter which will go to churches,town and police.An article for the
newspaper is also suggested .
Educational achievement information will be provided by professor Banks/Christopher.
The committee is going to develop questions and main concerns to help facilitate conversation. The
police will bring a Spanish speaking officer to interprete. It may be possible to get a news blurb on
Channel 22 and the newspaper through the town.
SCREENING OF"UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS". We want to have the screening and discussion.
Sonia is authorized to do this but we are looking for a venue. Sonia will contact Ken Reeves.
POLICE- no report. There is discussion re: screening/background checks of school staff.
SCHOOLS:
Mattituck-Jean and LeRoy met with Superintendent re: Restorative Justice. The Supt. Is going to discuss
with coordinators in school re: implementation .
Greenport-Oysterponds; idea of a North Fork calender.
Southold- no report.
Fishers Island-we need to identify rep. Chief Flatley will be going in 3 weeks if we need to get
information there. Bill Ruland states the town has an annual trip in August and an ABTF rep can go.
General discussion re: Narcan trainings as well as the need for more alternatives for youth activities.
OLD BUSINESS: There is discussion re: use of MLK funds. Some suggestions are 1. buy the documentary
"Undocumented". 2. Movie of Jesse Owens life "RACE", which describes his liofe struggles and his
determination. 3. During the camps climate survey it showed that disabled students are often targets of
bullying. "Lives Worth Living" is a film with people with disabilities.

NEW BUSINESS: youth Bureau interim is Bob Duffin.
There is discussion re: having the ABTF meetings at different schools during the year.
Christopher and LeRoy will attend Youth Forum. They will explore how ABTF can engage with them to
be a part of a project that fosters coordination with our mission in mind.
Sign- Bill reports the sign is being redone by the Dept of Public Works and will be re-hung.
Should we create a sticker"working towards a bias free community" to distribute?
There is a motion to adjourn made by Cindy seconded by Carolyn at 11:20 . All are in favor.
Next meeting will be held at town hall on March 21,2016 at 10 am.
