There is a motion made by Cindy Smith and seconded by Christopher North to accept the minutes of the previous
meeting with the following corrections: 1) Chief Flatley was present, 2) Reverend Dr. Marvin Dozier is his proper title now
and 3) Leroy should read La’Roy.
CIVIL SERVICE SEMINAR: Information sources: schools have been contacted, newspaper and local organizations have
been notified, eleven people have RSVP’d already at the time of ABTF general meeting. The event will be held at the
Peconic Lane Community Center on September 22, 7-8 p.m. The goal is to have a more diverse work force and to keep
offering the service to widen horizons. Discussion follows and perhaps we’ll follow up on more equal labor agreements for
companies.
HELEN PRINCE EVENT: Event will be on October 6, 2016. Set up will begin at 5 pm; the program starts at 6 pm. The
committee has already had two meetings and they are setting the agenda. Food will be supplied by the ABTF budget
(sandwiches- 3 trays, fruit and vegetable platters). The speaker will be the Reverend Dr. Marvin Dozier. Marjorie has
contacted the family of our Honoree (Merle Levine). Her daughter will be here. Carolyn will bring the poster. The Suffolk
Times will do a ½ page ad pro bono honoring Merle. They will also do a story and Carolyn is collecting information for that
story. We would like to have art work from students and feature Greenport School this year. Cindy will contact Greenport
School. Elementary students will display art work to promote diversity and middle school/high school students to do
creative writing with bullying being the topic. There is discussion about establishing a scholarship at a later date. A Helen
Prince mission statement is being developed. Denis will make sure the proclamation is done. Carolyn is doing the
wording.
SYNERGY: Committee volunteers are Valerie, Christopher, Sonia and Cindy. Chief Flatley and Professor Banks had
been available last year to facilitate last year’s discussion and will be contacted to do so again. Sonia will work with the
Latino population if interpretation is needed. Meeting date has not been set, but discussion suggesting researching
Greenport St. Agnes Hall and/or Floyd Memorial Library as possible venues as the fire house is not available on October
th
20. The gathering is encouraged to be before the election.
SCHOOLS: La’Roy wants to present letter to the Boards re: Helen Prince Award/Program.
POLICE: Chief Flatley reports there has been a blast of faxes – anti-Jewish rants- targeting the Jewish population. They
are trying to find the origin. Chief Flatley makes it known that Bailey’s Beach in Mattituck is not owned by the town. It is
owned by the Mattituck Park District. Therefore, it is not in our police department’s jurisdiction to remove people from that
property.
MEMBERSHIP: Committee has met and begun the process of developing a packet for new members.
NEW BUSINESS : Mary Eisenstein from the Mattituck/Laurel Civic Association, will be honoring native son, William Butch
Lynch Jr., who made noble efforts promoting the civil rights movement. The ABTF would like to write a letter to The
Suffolk Times to support the initiative. Susan will draft a letter.
There is discussion re: possibility of getting Certificates of Appreciation for vendors who participate in our events.
Approaching the town for the cost of the covers is suggested.
