Ref: Violation Repairs/ replacement of ATS
Dear Ms. Stanisic,
The following letter is to list the following violations that were repaired at your home and
the replacement of the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) to match the wiring utilized by
others.
Ocean Electric Corp. was called to the Stanisic residence on 2-25-16 at the above
address for an electrical outage and the generator not running. A kohier factory trained
Technician was dispatched to the location to troubleshoot the downed generator. Upon
arrival he found the following:
• Normal Utility Power was still out in the neighborhood.
• Generator was in the ready mode but didn't start or transfer power to emergency.
Our Technician checked out the generator and found it to be in working order.' He also
checked the ATS and found the following:
• The wiring used for the start stop landed on the RBUS connector was UF (direct
burial copper wire) which would've been acceptable if the previous installer had
used an RDT type Kohler ATS but not correct for an RXT switch.
• Our Technician tried to attempt to Temp-out the transfer switch using the proper
control wire above ground from the transfer switch to the generator (roughly 400
feet) but couldn't because the wrong wire had burned out the control board within
the current switch making it impossible without him having a replacement board to
temp the switch out. During our troubleshooting efforts the Utility Power had
returned to the residence.
• Proper control wire for the RXT switch is Beldon shielded twisted pair stranded
copper wire.
To offer a repair to Ms. Stanisic we needed to do further investigation into the previously
installed generator and ATS.
• From a cost savings perspective it will be less expensive to change the existing
RXT switch and re-install an RDT switch and use the current control wire. Beldon
wire isn't direct burial so trenching and a conduit from generator to house
penetration would've been required if we were to save the existing RXT switch
making the RDT a more cost effective solution.

Investigation also found the following "Electrical Violations" that were directly tied to the
current generator system installation:
• 2/3 direct burial Tray Cable was used as a feed for the generator to ATS. By
electrical code the Tray cable must not enter the residence more than 5 feet;
anything over 5-feet must transition to an approved wire, splices and splice box.
We removed twenty-five (25) extra feet of Tray cable and consequently replaced
with the proper wire, splices and splice box.
• We also removed 25 1- feet of UF direct burial wire which was used for control
circuitry and battery charger and replaced with the approved wire.
• At this point we pulled the disconnect and main panel cover and found more
violations:
o Neutrals and grounds are to be separated in the main panel when you use
a whole house disconnect/generator system they weren't and we rectified
the situation by accomplishing the separation of same.
o Previous installer used the main panel, disconnect and ATS as raceways
for Line and Load wiring also a code violation. Fused and unfused wires
can-not run in same conduits and or raceways; they must be separated.
o Line voltage from the street came into the main service panel and was
spliced with underground Polaris splices and extended through the panel,
into and through the disconnect switch and ATS; a code violation.
To keep the cost down to a minimum Ocean Electric accomplished the following:
• Removed the RXT switch and added an RDT.
• Removed the line voltage wire from the top of the main service panel and added
an outdoor splice box just west of the front door and extended the feed to meet the
existing 200 amp fused disconnect that we moved adjacent to,the main service
panel.
• Installed a new RDT-CFNA-0200A ATS adjacent to the Fused disconnect and
wired with new line and load side feeders to the fused disconnect and panel.
• Added a splice box on the east side of the basement to intercept the 2/3 Tray cable
and the 12UF underground copper Wire. Toned-out UF wires, marked and spliced
the 2/3 Romex to the Tray and two of the three 12-3 UF's to the 12 Romex wires
(the third was capped off and left in the box as a spare). Routed the required line
and low voltage wires to the ATS and connected same.
• Added ground bars and separated neutrals and grounds per electrical code.
• Run tested and accomplish a home transfer and shut-down to test the system.
See also repair contract written prior to accomplishment of the repair.
Sincerely,
