This month the students and faculty sold poinsettias with the proceeds being donated to the Shelter. Director Gillian Wood attended their holiday concert and accepted a check from the group. The ever ready volunteers again need to be thanked for their participation in the Annual Holiday parade in Greenport. The animals once again looked adorable in their glittery finery and were of course on their best behavior. Shelter news: The dog/cat population at the Shelter is alarmingly large as per usual this time of year. The majority of the cats are unfortunately on hold due to a ringworm outbreak. There are many wonderful adoptable dogs desperately in need of a home for the new year. Does anyone have any room? 1999 year end statistics proved better for our canine population than feline. The canine rate of redemption increased by 61/o, adoption rate remained the same at 39%, and the euthanasia rate decreased by 1%. Sadly, the cat adoption rate decreased by a depressing 28%which begins to explain the extraordinarily high number of cats at the shelter. Feline euthanasia rates dropped by 4%. Beagle season has not been as disastrous this year as it has been in the past. As of this writing, six abandoned hunting beagles have ended up at the Shelter, two already placed into new homes. Last year by this time we had received sixteen. Everyone knock on wood! Notable Adoptions: An early Christmas present netted the Shelter six kittens and their Mom. A crate was discovered outside the gate filled with these bundles of joy. Two of the six kittens were adopted in December and two more are slated to go home in January. Vixen, the mother ,a classically beautiful grey and white tabby is still waiting for her special person. Paulie, one of Russell Smith's forty dogs, came to SAS with an injured paw and heartworm. He was also one of the least socialized of the group. After physical rehabilitation and lots of love from shelter staff, Paulie was determined to be ready for adoption. One week later a gentleman came in who was looking for just the kind of dog Paulie was. When he brought Paulie back to have his sutures taken out we were all amazed at his transformation from a frail, timid dog to a robust, rambunctious companion. w 1999 Yearly Statistics Canine 1997 1998 1999 SEIZURES 224 232 260 i REDEMPTIONS 114 119 150 ADOPTIONS 105 92 103 COMPLAINTS 385 298 356 DECEASED 02 00 01 EUTHANIZED 05 07 06 Feline 1997 1998 1999 ADMISSIONS 101 132 136 ADOPTIONS 98 118 83 DECEASED 02 00 02 EUTHANIZED 02 08 04 OTHER 00 03 13 Southold Animal Shelter P.O. Gillian informed all present that according to Se. 356 of Article 26 of Ag and Mkts. The DCO's could not seize the animal unless it was in immediate medical need. Doors would have to be taped and monitored for 12 hours to prove the dog owner was not providing care for the animal. At this time Mr. Pressler entered the residence, opened the door and called the dog out. The dog was of good body weight and appeared healthy. Ms. Dot Moore of 345 Second Street came to 338 Second Street. She is the sister of the dog owner. DCO Gillian Wood secured the dog. Ms. Moore agreed to take responsibility for her brother's dog who according to Ms. Moore was on Synopsis for September 1999 Employees: Donna Zurek left the employee of the North Fork Animal Welfare League this month. She wanted to pursue an office career. She was replaced by Scott Carroll. Scott is a full time college student who takes most of his classes at night. He was a volunteer at the Shelter before becoming an employee. Publicity: The North Shore Animal League,NFAWL, and the Riverhead Volunteer Shelter Program all teamed up on Labor Day weekend to increase the number of people who meet our wonderful., adoptable shelter animals. The North Shore Animal League's Cooperative Adoption Program, run by Tammy Kirkpatrick, brought their mobile adoption unit to Southold Animal Shelter where we soon filled it with the best of our best. It was taken to the North Fork Bank parking lot in Greenport on Sunday of Labor Day weekend. Hundreds of people viewed our animals as well a few from RSVP. Literature about the League and what we do was given to each person. Both The Suffolk Times and the Traveler Watchman covered the event. Two of our kitten and one of dogs were adopted. The next Cooperative Adoption Event is tentatively scheduled for November 4'. On September 7th Shelter Director Gillian Wood and Board member Therese McGuiness spent the day speaking to the administrators and teachers of Oysterpond School in Orient. They have chosen Southold Animal Shelter as their Newsday's charity of choice. Brainstorming was done to establish ways the school children could benefit the shelter. Many great ideas were raised and plans to begin implimenting them are in the works. On September 25''the North Fork Animal Welfare League once again participated in Greenport's Annual Maritime Festival Parade. A big thanks to all who volunteered their time. The dogs looked great in their nautical bandanas and behaved impeccably. Also in September the Peace Group, and animal activist organization from Southampton, came to our Shelter. Their visit was the result of publicity initiated by Therese McGuiness. The group video taped the Shelter and it's director for close to three hours. This will be edited and run as a Public Television documentary. Updates as to when will be given. Donations: Southold Animal Shelter received a very generous donation from Timothy Coffey Landscaping. An offer was made by Dave DeMian to buy shade trees for the outside exercise pens. When Tim Coffey was approached to supply the trees and labor he offered to donate all of this allowing Mr. DeMian to provide other needed things to the Shelter. Both newspapers were contacted regarding Mr. Coffey's donation resulting in more free publicity for the Shelter. The North Fork Environmental Council donated a used computer system for the Kennel Office. Kennel Manger Gabby Glantzman's father and brother donated their time to get the system up and running. Two vehicles were donated to Southold Animal Shelter this month. One by Mr. Demian and one by Mr. Dennis McCarthy, Gillian's uncle. Both were sold resulting in a sizable donation to the Shelter. Exotics: On a blustery Sunday afternoon the Shelter received a phone call from an employee of Our Lady of Good Council Church in Mattituck. She had found a domestic rabbit wandering around the grounds. After trying for a few weeks to locate the owner of St. Fran the rabbit, the employee had to bring the rabbit to Shelter due to family allergies. St. Fran is now happily ensconced in a hutch that was originally built for an orphaned raccoon raised by Gillian. She's at the Shelter if anyone is interested or knows someone who is a rabbit fan. Notable Adoptions: In early June of this year Gillian received a phone call from a woman who was moving to Florida and had to "get rid"of her I I year old black lab. She wanted to drop her off at the Shelter. I explained that it would be especially cruel to drop off an 11 year old lab mix at the Shelter as she would be very difficult to place and the shelter would be an extremely stressful place for her at her age. A few days later the first employee to arrive found an old female black lab tied to the shelter fence. Buttons had arrived. Through other acquaintances it was discovered that poor Buttons had spent her whole life chained to a dog house. No wonder she seemed to enjoy the Shelter so much. She quickly became a staff favorite and we assumed we would enjoy her company for the rest of her life. Surprise! This month a wonderful family read a story written in the Suffolk Times that quoted Anna Cosimano telling the Buttons story. They had adopted their current dog after she had been tied to the fence a Riverhead Shelter. Needless to say, Buttons will be spending her twilight years taking long walks, sleeping in a bed, and just being spoiled in general. Earlier this year Julie Dickey adopted Max, a shepherd mix that had been at Southold Animal Shelter for a few years. She, her partner and their daughter love Max and all animals. The daughter found out that the neighbors cat had kittens and the neighbor was only able to place one of the four into a home. Julie and her daughter rescued the remaining three from imminent drowning and all have bee rehomed through the Shelter. Exotics: The Southold Town Pol:1 .ld request for Shelter staff this month. A construction crew working on a rn. :-th Road in Southold glanced up to the upper balcony and saw a rather]c. .,wn at them. Unable to convince any of the police officers to remove the ratl:. ,helter staff was called in. Joel clay captured and transported the iguana to No; . jpital. The League placed a found ad with photo in the Traveler Watchman, led and happily paid for the cost of the advertisement. Staff: Shelter Director Gillian ti's s off in the middle of August as her 4' anniversary was approaching and it situation. The staff performed well and the shelter ran smoothly. A speci: A, Steve Gruber who after a accelerated course on Shelter management wt.. Gillian was off and did a fine job with a minimum number of phone calls t, Fund raisins: David DeMian, a g: 'AS had the contents of a mostly shoe boutique that he wanted to sell a;. to SAS. A huge effort was put forth by all involved. East End Party Supply ;comer's Beach Club donated the room, David and Marie DeMian donate: .e staff and Board members of the NFAWL donated incalculable amounts of t. :,wood Perennials donated transportation, and Southold Town Recreation C chairs. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate and the sale was not tl ticipated. It definitely ended up in the black though and any publicity is certai:. ♦ Notable Adoptions: Ozzy, a huge black dominant male cat was brought to Southold Animal Shelter after being found in the middle of the road in Greenport.. He caused havoc in the adult cat room for a few months before being fostered to the Catholic Charities Parish Outreach Thrift Store in hopes of placing him. He did not like it there. He was returned to Southold Animal Shelter and began to once again terrorize the other adult cats. It was with great applause from both the shelter staff and the other cats when Ozzy was picked out by an equally tough single guy from Riverhead. From all reports the two are together bonding, grunting , growling, and generally getting along famously. Kennel Manager Gabby Glantzman received a call from a distraught woman in Greenport regarding an ill, pregnant dog in a Greenport backyard. When she arrived at the residence the dog was observed to be emaciated, although quite pregnant. She transported the dog to NFAH for the owner who had no means of transport. The owner, unable to properly care for the dog, was convinced to voluntarily surrender the dog to the NFAWL. It was decided by the veterinarian that the dog was too debilitated to give birth to and care for her litter so she was spayed. Mecca, as she was called, came back to SAS for recuperation and immediately became a favorite. Stick thin and exhausted from her ordeal she spent a few days underneath the spacious new desk in the office at either Gillian or Gabby's feet. About a week later one of the volunteer dog walkers came to the Shelter and announced that she was finally ready to adopt, in fact had already signed up for general obedience classes just needed a dog. She had been walking and looking for the right dog for months. Mecca came walking out from under the desk, laid her head down on the woman's knee and melted her heart. She went home the same day. P.O. Box 297, Southold, New York 11971 May 1999 Synopsis Employee News: I am happy to report yet another uneventful employee month. Donna Zurek would like to thank the Board of Director's for her raise. Donations: Many useful donations were made this month. Larry Smith, a neighbor of Gillian's, donated a great doghouse and a puppy pen. The pen is a chain link outside enclosure 6'x6'x4'. After the pen was constructed under a shade tree at the Shelter, Lynn Rienecker, of Pinewood Perennial's, was once again called upon to beautify the area at her cost. Generous as ever, she donated eight rose bushes which are now blooming, providing both color and odor control. (Very important when puppies are around!) Murphy's Law forever in control, the day the roses were planted we took in three puppies, All have since been adopted. Tricom Associates, a Greenport based company, was also very generous this month. After reading in the Spring Newsletter about our new office trailer they donated furniture. They were moving their offices and no longer needed all of the furniture they had. A large credenza, file cabinets, desks, and chairs were all donated. Can't wait to move into our swanky new digs. The highway Department's estimated time of transferral is July 1, 1999. Benja Schwartz, computer consultant and web designer, has donated many, many hours of his time over the past few weeks designing a web site for Southold Animal Shelter. For those of you who have internet access, the site is located at eastcreek.com, then click on the NFAWL logo. It is updated on a daily basis now as it is still under construction. Anna Cosimano also has a hard copy of the site as of 6/15/99 for those without web access. Please also feel free to visit the Shelter if you want to view the site on line. One added bonus to Benja's time spent at the Shelter are the invaluable technical lessons Gillian is receiving on the Shelter's computer equipment. The second, more priceless gift Benja has provided is a home for one of our Shelter dogs. He fell in love with a Bichon Frise he has named"Alta'. All is well. Notable Adoptions: Two of our log time Shelter residents were adopted this month. Jill, a black lab mix,was picked up RAL in February of 1997. Shortly after her arrival at the Shelter Jill gave birth to four puppies. As always Jill's puppies were quickly adopted. Jill remained at the Shelter for a full year before being adopted in March of 1998 by one of our dog walking volunteers. Unfortunately, even after initial introductions at the Shelter, the dog walkers resident canine would not except Jill into the household and she had to be returned. On May 15'Jill was finally again chosen by a family. After some initial problems with possessiveness towards her new family (not surprising as it took her two year to find them) she is doing well and is a"wonderful addition to our family.". "HELP US TO HELP THOSE WHO CANNOT HELP THEMSELVES" Pride was a dog that was originally adopted out of Riverhead pound and then abandoned in Southold town. He arrived at our Shelter in July of 1998. In spite of his endearingly asymmetrical ears he kept getting passed up at adoption time. On May 18' a couple came to the Shelter a bit teary eyed. They had just lost their dog to cancer and were "just here to look". One look at Pride was all it took. He was on his way home the next day and is doing great. 'II ifylii` } III ti 4 PRIDE PORKCHOP HOME AND HAPPY STILL HOPING... Potential adoptee of the month: Porkchop is a mature terrier mix that has been at the Shelter for about eight months. She is approximately five years old and was already spayed when she arrived. She is healthy, smart and loyal. She would need to be introduced to any other dogs in the family before being taken home as she is a bit particular as to her friends. Please come and visit. NORTH FORK ANIMAL WELFARE LEAGUE, INC. East Patchogue NY 11772 289-9351 c Synopsis for April 1999 Employees: It is happily announced that all persons employed in March of 1999 remain with us in April. Facility Update: Another happy announcement. All the feral cats that were liberated last month are thriving in their new environment. They arrive at the "kitty condo" en masse each morning to be fed and are seen periodically throughout the day lazing in the sunshine. Stress related health problems that had developed while they were confined indoors have all but disappeared. Publici . A creative Southold Elementary School student helped to publicize the work we do at the Shelter as well as raise funds during the annual talent show. Michelle Pelletier, a sixth grade student, had been to the Shelter on numerous occasions with her mother Rene who is involved in feral cat population control. Chelley decided that the Talent Show would be an excellent forum for positive publicity for the Shelter. On the night of the show Gillian and Gabby brought Onyx, a two year old black lab mix, to the High School for his big debut. Chelley sang the tune Tomorrow from the musical Annie with Onyx standing by her side. She then gave a short speech regarding the wonderful animals available at the Shelter for adoption and the importance of spaying and neutering your pets. Gabby, meanwhile, "passed the hat" throughout the audience collecting a substantial sum in donations for the cause. Education: On April 29t'', Gillian, Gabby, Vinnie, and Joel participated in a class given by the American Red Cross to become certified in Pet First Aid. This is the equivalent of CPR/First Aid Management for humans. All passed the course and are now qualified to perform mouth to snout and treat emergency first aid situations in the field. Notable Adoptions: Lloyd and Eileen Becker once again have proven their devotion to our shelter animals. A third Shelter dog has been added to their menagerie. Shaggy was at Southold Animal Shelter for about two years. He had a few behavioral problems which were difficult to address at the Shelter and made him not as adoptable as most. Eileen and Lloyd decided that Shaggy's good qualities far out weighed his bad and after a successful introduction to their current canine residents took Shaggy home. Thanks for providing a home for another long term shelter resident. Nikoli was a kitten in the Spring of 1998. He was a sweet tempered black and white male cat. His entire litter was adopted, but Nikoli remained at the Shelter. This past winter he was finally adopted. Unfortunately, his new owner developed allergies and could not keep him. On April 28th, Nik finally got a permanent new home with a loving family. { "Shaggy" Southold Animal Shelts _Z • P.O. Moondance, a popular local band, provided the entertainment for the event. Inclement weather may have contributed to the somewhat poor turnout, but all that attended had a great time. Marie Heller, a Avon representative, is also helping to raise funds for the League. Twenty-five percent of the next three Avon campaign monies will come directly to the League. All advertising costs incurred for the fund-raiser are being paid by Marie. Stop by the shelter for a catalogue if you haven't received one. Employ_Due to personal problems, kennel attendant Laura Lynch had to terminate her employ with the NFAWL. She was replaced by Marie Heller. Unfortunately,Marie developed health problems shortly after being hired and could not perform the required duties. Marie was replaced by Lyn Chituk. Good luck to Lyn. On March 26th Kennel Manager Gabby Glantzman became the proud "grandmother" of a dark bay filly named Cecilia. After weeks of sleeping at the barn on foal watch, her mare Ingenue gave birth to the new addition to her family. Mother, baby and Gabby are all doing well. Facility news: A freak gust of wind during a storm at the end of the month left one of our long term Shelter residents homeless. Mae, our 140 pound Akita, had a very Oz-like experience when a rogue puff lifted her large outside kennel and tossed it thirty feet over the stockade fence into the Highway Department yard. Luckily, Mae is not easily perturbed and was waiting patiently, uninjured, inside the gate of the compound when the first kennel attendant arrived in the morning. Both The Suffolk Times and The Traveler Watchman reported the incident resulting in an influx of donations to rebuild Mae's enclave. With kitten season rapidly encroaching, a progressive space creating idea has been utilized. Although the policy of the NFAWL has been not to accept feral cats ,over the years, due to extenuating circumstances, several have made a home at the Shelter. These cats, after having been vaccinated, tested and altered, were placed into the group adult cat room. This situation caused extreme stress in this timid felines. After consulting with Dr. Petrone a more humane alternative was arrived at. A small shed on Shelter property was cleaned out and transformed into a comfortable cat house. In their new home the cats only had to deal with unwanted human contact during morning feeding and sanitation. After a few weeks a cat door was created to allow them egress if they desired. Initially, all ventured out. One found her way back into the adult cat room through the kennel office. As this was her personal choice, she was allowed to stay. The other five have adjusted well to indoor/outdoor life. They can be seen either snoozing inside their private abode or racing about the compound acting as rodent patrol. Notable adoptions: Max is a fine example of the old adage "There's a cover for every pot". Max • came to Southold Animal Shelter in early 1995 as an adorable shepherd mix puppy who was soon adopted out. Unfortunate, the adoption proved to be unsuccessful and Max was returned to the 0 Shelter some months later due to no fault of his own. He was now a bit unsocialized and no longer an infinitely adoptable"puppy". He lived at the Shelter, watching his numerous kennel mates find homes, for the ensuing years. Although a staff favorite, his shyness made him appear difficult, limiting the number of potential adopters who looked twice. Along came Jill, Julie and their eleven year old daughter. It was just Max's shyness that attracted them. They saw through his gruff facade to the real Max who was actually longing for attention. Patiently they gained his trust and on March 29`x'took him home. All reports so far are favorable. Three cats found a home this month. Tara, Cecil, and Carmen all happened to be feeling equally affectionate on the same day. Something must have alerted them that the couple perusing the cat room were open to the idea of a multiple cat household. All three wantonly threw themselves at the unsuspecting potential adopters destroying their ability to make a choice. Good work guys. IN "MAX" i NORTH FORK ANIMAL WELFARE LEAGUE, INC. NFAWL Road Southold NY 11971 February 1999 Synopsis Publicity: The Metro Learning Channel, which can be viewed on Riverhead Cablevision's channel 1,has a program called Metro pets. An employee of the MLC, Kathy Nugent, saw the article on our beagle problem and called Gillian to ask if she could feature our beagles on Metro Pets. This has since become a weekly for adoption bulletin board for the Shelter with two of our dogs posted each Tuesday and Thursday night at 8:30PM. The North Fork Antique Dealer's Association hosted a"Sweetheart Weekend for Animals" over Valentine's Day weekend. A percentage of the total sales for all the participating shops will be donated to the League. The Traveler Watchman and the Suffolk Times continue to give free updates and advertising for special events as does Fisherman's Rest. Fisherman's had their yearly holiday this month so the Shelter once again was allowed to use their entire ad space. Thanks are in order. New Office: The Riverhead Volunteer Program donated a bigger, better trailer to the NFAWL this month. It will soon be installed in place of the existing office trailer. The larger trailer will provide a separate room for vet exams, no longer will staff have to eat their lunch on the same table animals are examined. It will also provide a more efficient Isolation area with it's own bathroom, washer and dryer. We are very grateful for this gift. Notable Adoptions: We had several notable feline adoptions this month. Rosy and Posy had been Shelter residents several years ago. Their owner developed cancer shortly after they were adopted but managed to care for them throughout her very tough battle with the disease. Sadly, she passed away this month and the cats had to come back to the Shelter. They only had to spend 6 days at the Shelter before a kind hearted family, hearing their sad tale, adopted them both. Billie, a long time Shelter resident and officemate to Gillian, was adopted on February 4'. She was the only cat at the Shelter that was allowed indoor/outdoor access. This was because if she was confined to the indoors only she became very nervous and began to pull out her own hair. A fifteen year friend of Gillian's had been talking about adopting a cat for years. Billie was always the first choice because he wanted an indoor/outdoor. Billie moved into his Laughing Water's home and has refused to step outside since. She now dominates his 65# dog and has decided that living inside is pretty nice. Buddy is a geriatric Himalayan that came to SAS as a stray in October of last year. He was emaciated, flea ridden and dehydrated. He was also sporting a nasty upper respiratory infection. After a few weeks of intensive rehabilitation, basically consisting of lots of TLC, he was deemed well enough to move into the adult catroom where he reined King. On February I I' an older couple came to the Shelter looking for a kitten. We had none available at the time but they decided to look around. A few minutes later I spotted the woman holding and brushing Buddy. I knew she wouldn't be able to resist. When her husband brought it to her attention that Buddy was a bit old, she reminded him that so were they! A perfect match. The following letter arrived a few weeks after the adoption. Dear Gillian, I'm writing to thank you and your dedicated staff and volunteers for taking such good care of "Buddy" so that we could eventually have such a beautiful healthy pet. I didn't want to visit an animal shelter—we've adopted before—cats in cages, begging to be let out.-- having to steel your heart because you can't take them all. Your shelter is upbeat, the catteries are immaculate , user friendly and cat friendly. There is no antiseptic smell(takes weeks to get rid of!)But the rooms are immaculate. Buddy is doing fantastically! His coat is beautiful—we got rid of the remaining knots and snarls gradually. He spent a week in seclusion, coming out more and more. Now he is King of the House—purrs constantly, stretches out beside us every PM and lets us know when he needs more petting. A wonderful addition to our lives. He's still a bit skittery but is becoming more confidant every day. Barbara Ringwald The most notable thing about the dog adoptions for February was the numbers. Desi, Trapper, Old Girl, Bell,Pepper, King, Jason, Lassie, Maggie,Nav, Sam, Puppy#1, Puppy#2 and Heidi. Fourteen in all. It was a good month! T .2 NORTH FORK ANIMAL WELFARE LEAGUE, INC. P O.
