Historic Preservation Commission Minutes
3:00 p.m., August 17, 2015
Town Hall Annex Executive Board Room
Attendees:
Anne Surchin, Donald Feiler, James Grathwohl, Robert Harper, Gary Parker,

Call to Order:
The meeting was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Vice Chair Anne
Surchin.
Approval of Minutes:
The minutes of July 21, 2015 were approved unanimously.
Chairman’s Comments
Vice Chair Surchin had no comments, but offered the floor to Commissioner Grathwohl
who had an opening comment:
Commissioner Grathwohl thanked Commissioner Harper, his wife Catherine, and
th
everyone else who made the 375 Anniversary Parade, particularly the HPC float, a
success. Commissioner Grathwohl also thanked Commissioner Harper for his editorial
piece regarding the loss of the Aldrich/Corwin House in the Town of Riverhead.
Old Business
Using CPF Money for Historic Preservation
Vice Chair Surchin presented evidence to show that CPF funds could in fact be
o
used to protect historic structures. She suggested a letter to the editor regarding
the use of Community Preservation Fund monies to protect historic structures.
Commissioners agreed and Commissioner Grathwohl noted that the Peconic Land
Trust is currently promoting the preservation of historic facades.
Commissioners agreed to continue the discussion of using CPF funds for Historic

preservation
Advertising & Public Relations
Chairman Grathwohl announced that he had cancelled a proposed historic
o
preservation week with planned workshops and presentations.
Commissioners discussed using budgeted finances to do advertising in local
o
newspapers regarding the importance of historic preservation.
Robert agreed to discuss the issue with the Suffolk Times and report back to the
o
commission.

Commissioner Harper reported that he had found an organization that may help
o
fund the construction at the above referenced property and agreed to continue
investigating the matter.

Commissioners discussed getting a press release to the newspapers ahead of the
o
upcoming town board meeting and ceremony adding the property to the town’s
registry of historic landmarks.
New Business
Registry of Historic Landmarks
After reviewing the registry, Commissioner Harper found that out of
o
approximately 1100 SPLIA listed properties only 272 were protected by the
registry. He discussed the importance of offering incentives to homeowners to
landmark their properties. Discussion again focused on the need to lobby for the
use of Community Preservation Fund money.
Vice Chair Surchin agreed to contact individuals involved in the Community
o
Preservation Fund to discuss the matter further.
Vice Chair Surchin also suggested that the town consider “delay of demolition”
o
legislation for added protect of historic structures.
