Dear Town Board Members,
As concerned citizens and property owners in the town of Southold,
we are writing this letter to express our opposition ~o any land filling
or building on the property located on the north bank of Great Pond,
wes~ of Lake Court and south of Lake Drive.
The property in question has been classified as wetlands by the
State DeparUment of Enviornmental Conservation. (Please see enclosed
copy of a letter dated October 7, 1977 from the DEC to James Meo).
A visit to the site at different times of the year will reveal
many of mother nature's activities taking place - such as fish spawning,
birds nesting and feeding, and m~ny kinds of wild grasses and plant life,
all of which contribute to ms~ntain the very delicate balance of the
eco-systems of the lake and surrounds.
Great Pond today is one of a very few remaining fresh water lake
on Long Island. We should not permit activities to occur which will
diminish its wetlands content, no mztter how small or minor some may
Judge such activities to be.
We urge you not to permit the land filling or building construction,
for which your approval is sought, to take place.
Since this matter will come before you for board consiceration,
~? wish this letter to also serve as written notification to the Board
that we want to speak on this subject at that time.

Dear Mr. Thurber:
I wish to ~o on record with your department that I strongly OODOSe the
granting of a permit ~o build a single family residence on the lot specified
in application =10-82-1102 (Suffolk Co. Tax ~iap Sec, 59 - Block5 - Lot 31),
This lot is one of the last.open spaces on Great Pond Lake in Sobthold. It
is a wildlife refuge and overflow tributary of Great Pond.
During the spring months the area encomoassed within this lot is a sDawnina
ground for the fish in the lake. It is also one of the few remain~na natural
habitats of~nany birds .and other animals. I have often witnessed several
hundred birds sleeping on the rushes.
If you allow these areas to be built uPOn the cummulative effect on the local
enviornment with respect to our drinkinc water, our so.il contamination and a
safe haven for our wildlife will be ~rre~arable.
I strongly urge you to viqorously enforce our existinm laws and regulations
established to ~rotect areas such as this lot from destructive development.
I am hoping and praying my local tow~ authorities will also e.xercise their
duties ~n the regard.
Please advise me wnen and ~= a hearino ~s scheduled by your Deoartment in this
