August 27,1965 Mr. Lester Alber[son,Supervisor Town of Southhold Greenport, New York Dear Sir: You will recall our discussion by telephone July 21st last relative to the corn pletion of the dredging operation in Deep Hole Greek. Specifically, this concerned the necessity to open the mouth of the North branch of the creek at the entrance to the bay. Prior to the recent dredging of the main creek there was sufficient water in this channel for movement of small boats at all but low par[ of the tides. However, since the dredging and the use of the adjacent meadows for spoils area with the consequent lowering of the creeks' water level, this branch creek can only be used at the highest part of the tide for a few hours a day. On th~ incoming tide the main body of the creek fills first before overflowing up the course of the branch creek. As the tide tums the water first rushes out of the branch and we are left high and dry in about an hour after flood. The empty creek is considerably %unsightly also the boat owners' whose properties face on this branch find this a serious inconvenience and a definite disadvantage contrasted to the obvious great improvement enjoyed by the main body of the creek. We recognize that this is a unique situation that has resulted from an advantage received by a majority of our neighbors. Because of its' unusual nature and our desire to participate fully in the improvement, the following group of property owners wish, at personal expense, to continue the dredging on the North branch to open its mouth and establish a 30'X 9' X 800' channel: A.Smith, W.Harrod, D.Newton, J.Retdy, H.Crowell, EoNash, H.Huecker and M. Surer. It is our understanding that such a job can be adequately done for $1500.00 to $2000.00 and we fur[her believe and understand that there is a pro- vision for the Town or County to participate in the expense of such an operation to do the needed work of opening the mouth of this branch of the creek. We will appreciate your advice and assistance in accomplishing this needed work. We also wish to express our sincere appreciation for your past help in effectlng im[~ove- ments in our area. ~. truly yours,,,-'-') .~ '/~ ames F. Reidy ~-~ eoretary
