Y. 11971 Dear Mr. Fish: As we discussed, I have applied for a Certificate of Occupancy and a Building Permit to update this old house. My great grandfather Patrick May purchased this house in 1840 and it has been in the family since. My mother Josephine (May) Gaughran, now deceased, was born in the house in 1898. After the death of my Grandmother and Grandfather the house reverted to my mother and her sister Julia May. In 1949 my mother and my Aunt Julia had the house converted to a two family house. This was done by George Smith, Builder, Main Road, Southold (deceased). Since 1949 apartments in this house have been regularly rented. A number of previous tenants are still residents of Southold. Julia May died in 1982 and I purchased the house in September 1984 from Margaret (Neary) Saladino, my cousin, and John E. Gaughran, my brother, as the house was in need of repair and I decided I would attempt to renovate it and eventually live in it when I retired. During 1985-1986 I updated the 2nd floor apartment with insulation and a new electric service. I also had the house vinyl sided and a new roof installed. I now plan to remove the old kitchen and install a new one and build a two car garage. These are the details as best I can recall. The primary reason that I want to renovate and reside in the house is that it is my family homestead and I have spent the happiest days of my life in that old house and in Southold.
