SOUTHOLD TOWN ANTI-BIAS TASK FORCE MINUTES 9/21/15
PRESENT: Eleanor Lingo, Marjorie Day, LeRoy Heyliger,Valerie Shelby,Sonia Spar,Jean LePre, Chris
North, Cindy Smith, Linda Ruland
Excused: Carolyn Peabody,Susan Dingle,and Louise Hug ,
Guests:William Ruland, Madeline Papa,James Banks and Thelma Harris(Southampton ABTF)
LeRoy motions to approve the minutes, Marjorie seconds the motion; all are in favor.
HELEN PRINCE AWARD: We have come in under budget and all proposed costs have been submitted to
the comptroller. The revised is$1008.71. The vendors were changed from KK to IGA and Drossos to
Townsend Manor. (4 nights 1 room for Mrs. Princes sons to attend the event). There will be a 1/4 ad in
the Suffolk Times (no charge). CAST will donate$100 towards meals for the Prince bros. Paper goods
will be provided by the nutrition center. The Suffolk Times will do 2 posters(1 will be a bio and
1/pictures). They will also have a display on their web page. Suffolk Times will also have an ad. There
will be a press release from the Town of Southold and the speaker will be Tracy Maloney (Floyd
Memorial teen librarian)
Every October is United Nations Teachers Day as well as it is anti Bullying month. There is a motion
made by LeRoy to make the Helen Prince Award an annual event for the ABTF. This honor will be given
to a community persofi nominated for their work to promote diversity, equality and celebrating our
differences and standing up to all forms of discrimination in our community. All are in favor.
STUDENT AMBASSADOR PROGRAM-will be held Wed. Oct.7,2015 at the Riverhead library at gam.We
are working in collaboration with Southampton and Riverhead ABTF.

SYNERGY: is a program being done which has been initiated by Southampton ABTF already. Professor
Banks is the chairperson of the Southampton ABTF as well as Director of Multi cultural Affairs for Suffolk

Community'College. Synergy brings together community, residents(including the undocumented),
students and police.
The program is used to facilitate dialogue and how to work together as a community. Lt. Donahue and
police officer Brenner(who is also a member of the Southampton ABTF)take part in Synergy. There is
collaboration with the town and churches. Helping churches to secure their buildings is part of the
dialogue. Chris makes a motion to put Synergy event in motion for Spring on the North Fork as well as
create bumper stickers . Val seconds . All are in favor.
SCHOOLS: Oysterponds- no report
Greenport—NO report
Southold-no report
Mattituck- @ community service certificates have been handed out to give to students who have
provided service to the ABTF. ABTF will keep a file . The principal and coordinator received Mrs. Prince
article and a request for their participation in the October 5 celebration.
POLICE: Phone complaint of alleged discrimination at the Horton Point Lighthouse/gay bashing. ABTF
has reached out to the historical Society who has stated they want to separate these volunteers from
working together. There is discussion re:clear ABTF policy of how to handle discrimination. ABTF
should follow up to make sure that both sides were spoken to.What are the by laws of the Historical
Society as it relates to discrimination not being allowed in the work place.
MLK—Discussion re: upcoming event. Eleanor has secured a speaker,Tracy Saunders as well as
Cutchogue Methodist Church will host and Just B Cuz (singers) have been contacted.
NEW BUSINESS;
DISCUSSION RE: NYC group that does role playing/students and adults act out relational issues. This
may be an idea to be formulated on NF.
Anti bias key is introspection "look into yourself".
Riverhead has re-started their ABTF and East Hampton is trying to reorganize. Southold library presents s`
Eleanor Morris Lingo on Sunday Sept 27 at 3pm "A Simple Act Made History."
At 12:07 Valerie motions to adjourn and Linda seconds. All are in favor.
Next meeting to be held October 19 at Town Hall 10 am.
