A meeting of the 375th Anniversary Committee was held on Thursday July 10, 2014 at the Southold Town
conference room, 53095 Main Road Southold.
Present:Supervisor Scott Russell, Councilman James Dinizio,Jr.,Councilman Bob Ghosio,Jr.,Chairman Herb Adler,
Jim Grathwohl, Peggy Murphy, Mark Terry, Ruth Bramson.
Absent: Dan McCarthy, Nick Planamento,Gail Horton, Norm Wamback,Walter Jackson
Scott suggests that it is needed to identify initiatives and events-evaluate-and come up with resources needed.
Jim Grathwohl: budget, projects,events,schedule, publications, logo
Herb Adler: Cannot fundraise/solicit funds
Suggestion: Coast Guard-do concert at lighthouse, Hampton Jitney maybe to volunteer to bring them to New
London.
Scott said he doesn't know what the Town will provide; he needs a budget
Jim said you need to pick the size of the job; money doesn't buy volunteers
Suggestion: Go to historical societies and other organizations; contact Southold Town Promotion Council for ads
Herb Adler: Parade on Memorial Day weekend
Peg Murphy: Disagrees. Says hamlets are responsible for that parade yearly. Says late July or August
Herb Adler: Parade to start in Mattituck,then Cutchogue,Southold, Greenport and Orient(not all in one fell
swoop).
Councilman Ghosio: Doesn't know if we really need to have 5 parades.

Peg Murphy: Activities should be based in Southold hamlet as it is the seat of our government.
(man): Southold is where it all started. Parade in Southold-other communities encouraged to have their own
functions. Committees for each event,each with its own chairman.
Peg Murphy: Suggested Southold Yacht Club to sponsor an event. It was suggested that all other area yacht clubs
be included.
(man) In 1940 there was a yacht club regatta. Indian exhibit should be included. Baseball is now big within the
Town; have them do something.
It was suggested that the Town Historian do an Anniversary Journal (solicit ads???). it should be for the Town
history as well as individual hamlets.
Herb Adler: Need NEW material for journal.
Councilman Ghosio: Not necessarily(although it could be updated). There are many that have not seen the
original journal.
?: Said he heard that the Wharf House be used for something.
Peg Murphy: Sunfish race at Founders Landing. Also stated that the last parade was held on July 14 at 4 p.m. in
Southold hamlet.
Herb Adler: Said they need to determine how many events and the scheduling of them.
Suggestion: Founders family picnic; parade in Southold hamlet.
Invite Mayor of Southwold,Suffolk England to be honorary chairman, paying his own way to come here.
LOGO—no time for contest. Update/amend bicentennial logo(made in 1976) change wording and dates.
Parade with floats and descendants.
Historical societies^'ask each one to do exhibits.
Events^'each community would be asked to have events of their own.
Separate committee for each hamlet, melding it together by using logo
Ben Franklin mile markers^ stamp covers with USPS on the mile markers

Re-enactment of landing at Southold Yacht Club
Parade. Ideas from the 1940 parade included fireworks,tours of exhibits,costume ball, baseball game^'spread
events out over the summer.
(new man) Art Show^ Russian show^ see if he could do an installation. He resides in Southold Town and has
artwork in every museum in the U.S.
Councilman Ghosio: Historic(late 1800s) baseball game.
Peg Murphy: Regatta
Ruth Bramson: Speaker series in hamlets with coordinated theme.
Website. It was suggested incorporating it into the Town's website
Products^'tee shirts, cups, nautical theme and done right.
Scavenger hunt for children
Bike ride throughout town
Historical baseball game.
Going back as far as we can to local newspapers,compiling Letters to the Editor. They are the peoples' own
voices. Have a polished productions^'dramatic rendition.
Tour of homes—of every variety and time period.
Recognize oldest and newest businesses in Town.
Organized readings and discussion at local libraries using scholars and historians.
Essays from HS students on the future. Winners read essays. It was suggested that a HS students should be on
this Board.
Heritage Day^'parade,dress up pets, bikes, reading of Declaration of Independence by various people of
various ages, music, bag pipes,free hot dogs, games(egg toss,3-legged race).
Councilman Ghosio: Contact Russ Wells who is a period performed at Old Williamsburg.
Concert: local music from local artists such as Dave Horton and Douglas Moore.

Councilman Ghosio:Treasure Hunt-geo-tracking. Find Capt. Kidd's treasure. Man #2:Steal Southampton's flag
(with notification to them). GHOSIO: Maybe get Dan's Papers to do a farce where Southampton declares ware or
Southold or vice versa. Which came first? Make it a competition.
Town Historian should be on committee. Scott said she's earned her right to opt out. Peg wondered if it would
be ok to ask her to write a history of the hamlets.
Jim Grathwohl: Jeff Fleming would be willing to write a book for the event.
Ruth Bramson: Part of the role of the Board is to reach out to many, many groups. Define scope,theme,
message,calendar,website and PR. MAYBE ask Lloyd Reisenberg to add the celebration to the Town's website.
Jim Grathwohl: Put on Channel 22 as well.
<man #2>time frame should be from Memorial Day to Columbus Day????
House tours are usually done around Christmas. However, people are uneasy about opening their houses to
strangers.
Peg Murphy:Suggested tour of Southold churches.
Ruth Bramson: Open archives- make available things in the archives that aren't normally available to the public
(historical societies).
<man> North Fork Chorale is willing to do something.
Councilman Ghosio: 375th"'doesn't have to be as big as,say,350th or 400th. Keep it simple and do it well.
Ruth Bramson: Start coordinating with historical societies. Need list of individuals to be involved.
Peg Murphy: Need letter to go out to groups, i.e. Chamber of Commerce, Greenport Business District, Lions Club.
<man> Need to get 5, 6,7, 8 events Parade^'what else?
Need to know from Scott to what extent Toni will be involved and what kind of support the Board will get from
the Town. Scott will talk with Toni. Lloyd will put our info but will NOT writ it. Sara Evans will help with any
publications.
Ruth Bramson: For the next meeting we need to prioritize and also to make a list of what the committee is going
to get behind. Secondly,everyone should come with a printed list of names,addresses and email addresses of
people that should be involved with the celebrations.
<man>: Also needed are two draft letters ready for the next meeting. (7/21 at 6:30 p.m.; contact Lauren or
Michelle to reserve room.)

Nick Planamento of the North Fork Promotion Council will help (shhh ^'getting sponsorships!) Historical Societies
can take money and the Town can accept donations from them.
Councilman Ghosio: Perhaps contact the local papers and see if they'd be willing to have a writer do some
historical pieces periodically.
Peg Murphy: Getting letters to the civic groups and churches is critical.
Maybe get fire departments to get together to sponsor fireworks. It was discussed that perhaps that wasn't
needed as Brecknock is going to be putting on a major fireworks display next year.
Councilman Jim Dinizio is going to try to get his wife to transcribe his recordings.
