HomeMy WebLinkAbout11/18/2013 Southold Transportation Commission Southold Town Hall November 18, 2013 Meeting Called to order: 10:00 AM by Chairman Neb Brashich Members Present: Frank Field,Town Engineer Jamie Richter,Highway Superintendant Pete Harris, Margaret Brown, Chief Martin Flatley,Jim Baker, Greenport Rep Bob Feger, Rona Smith,Planning Director Heather Lanza. Minutes of October 25,2013 The minutes were approved as presented. EETC Update: Chairman Neb Brashich reported that no EETC meeting had been held in the previous month. Planning Board: The Transportation and Infrastructure Chapter of the Comprehensive Plan Update is to be delayed to February 2014. Current Transportation Issues: • Bus Shelters Cutchogue and Southold: Chairman Brashish reported that the site for the bus shelter has been selected and is ready to proceed. The preferred site in Southold,located in front of the library has not been affirmed. A letter from Caroline MacArthur, Director of the Library was provided to committee members. In her letter, Ms. MacArthur states that the Library Board,at its meeting on October 23, 2013,voted no on the shelter placement in front of the library on Route 25. Further exploration of the placement issue will be required. It was noted that each of these shelters will cost$15,000. • Orientation/Interpretive Signage Project-RBA Phase II: The$90,000 for the project has been allocated. Now awaiting response from the DOT to the contractor and resolution of details. • Handicapped Parking Space,Southold Pharmacy. Highway permit and insurance documentation is required and will be handled by the T own Engineering Department. • Speeding on Cox Lane,Cutchogue. Chairman Brashich sent a letter to Mr. Richard Glover who brought his concerns to the committee. The letter indicated that the problem should be addressed as part of the Transportation Chapter of the Town's Comprehensive Plan Update. A discussion regarding traffic calming measures and accountability to speed limits. • Reduced Speed Limits On Wells Avenue,Southold. Chairman Brashich sent a letter to Stephen Feeney who brought this issue to the attention of the Committee. Mr. Feeney Was encouraged to canvas his neighbors to determine if the perception of the problem is widely shared and to garner support for any proposed solution. Once such a petition is received. The committee will recommend the placement of two sets of yellow cautionary signs,exact placement still to be determined. • Request for a Bus Stop Bench,Mattituck. Chairman Brashich informed Ms. Dennehy the letter writer from Douglas Elliman Real Estate that no funds are currently available for this. However if the entity would decide to donate the bench,the Commission would undertake getting all the required permits from the NYSDOT. • No Parking Sign on Old Sound Avenue. Signs have been placed. • Southold and Cutchogue Bus Shelters. No problem to proceed in Cutchogue. Library Board has still not approved site in front of Southold Library. DPW has noted that the shelter has to be at least 6 feet behind the sidewalk walkway. New Business: • The Orient Fire Department has again requested restricted parking in Orient Hamlet on the south side of Village Lane,as it becomes King Street. This was initially proposed on 6/26/12 and was unanimously defeated by the Town Board. This request is to bring the matter back to the Town Board.
