Box 1179 Southold, New York 11971-0959 Fax (631) 765-1823 Telephone (631) 765-1889 OFFICE OF THE SUPERVISOR TOWN OF SOUTHOLD Economic Development Committee (EDC) Meeting Minutes October 16, 2015 Present: Steve Latham, John McLane, Sara Garretson, Donielle Cardinale, Rona Smith, John Stype, Tony Cocheo, Councilman Bill Ruland and Phillip Beltz. Excused: Carolyn Fahey and Supervisor Scott Russell. Meeting began at 2:00 p.m. Follow-Up: Karen Karp-Karp Resources: Agreement that Ms. Karp should facilitate the discussion meeting with local food growers and that EDC should provide her with a stipend of $500 for consultative services. This meeting will be held in early 2016. Additional agreement that the EDC should solicit her professional services to write grant on behalf of Town (EDC) to quantify the food industry-who grows, sells, processes and distributes and how much. In addition, grant could develop marketing strategies to connect producers to buyers to promote economic development identifying the major local businesses (schools, government, Peconic Landing, ELIH) and consider implementation of local procurement strategy to enable businesses to purchase local foods. th 375 Anniversary-American Express Small Business Saturday “Experience Southold’s Historic Hamlets: th On September 24 there was a meeting with local businesses and heritage organizations to discuss small business Saturday initiative on th November 28 to encourage visitors to “shop, eat and enjoy the local hamlets.” Sara developed a “fact sheet” that can be used as an invitation—EDC should encourage local businesses to participate. Targeted areas include Love Lane, Greenport Village, Cutchogue hamlet and Southold hamlet. Hamlet “captains” have been designated and Abigail Field of the North Fork Promotion Council has been instrumental in moving this initiative forward. EDC agreed to allocate funding towards development of marketing materials for this event (less than $1,000.) Follow-up Southold Opera Company : Phillip will request follow-up meeting to inform them of tax-abatement assistance with SCICIP plan. In addition he will see if they can participate in Small Business Saturday event in Southold hamlet. The Old Town Arts & Crafts Guild : Rona and John McLane continue to provide assistance meeting with Bob Kuhne. They are changing their hours, working on business plan and may seek grant for renovations. Invitation to Bruce Ferguson: He could not attend October meeting, Rona and Steve will invite to November meeting—he will discuss the Southold Local Development Corporation’s benefit to local non-profits and its ability to foster economic development. Invitation to Patricia Snyder, East End Arts: John McLane will invite to the December meeting and she can also discuss her work with Town of East Hampton in developing a cultural consortium. Town Board Work Session Discussion: Philip reported that the Supervisor requested that all Town committees schedule a meeting with the Town Board to discuss goals and objectives--it would be beneficial time for EDC to meet with them to discuss th upcoming initiatives. It is scheduled for Tuesday, October 20 at 11:30 a.m. Phillip will send discussion items in advance of the meeting. EDC Transition: Phillip requested that EDC elect/select a Chair and Secretary in his absence—this would only be until March 2016 as all terms expire and members can seek Town Board re-appointments. Rona and Sara volunteered to assume these respective roles. Next Meeting Dates : Agreement that Friday is good day for EDC meetings.
