6:30 P.M.
Southold Town Annex Board Room
A meeting of the Deer Management Committee was held Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at the Southold Town
Annex Board Room, Youngs Ave & Main Rd., in Southold.
Present were: Chairperson(s): Dave Dominy & Laura Klahre; Members: John Betsch, Jeff Standish, Adam
West, John Rasweiler, Nancy Foote; Guest: Mimi Ellis
Call to order
:
Dave Dominy called the meeting to order at 6:40 P.M.
Part Time Wildlife Manger
: Southold Town Board asked the committee to discuss the possibility of hiring a
part time employee to address the issue of deer management as proposed by the North Fork Deer Alliance. The
NFDA would like to see this individual meet with community groups including homeowner’s associations to
support more productive deer harvesting, esp on private land. This person can also meet with individual
owners. Future endeavors may include organizing cull programs and acting as liaison with outside experts. This
individual would represent the Town of Southold and could possibly be shared with Land Preservation
Department. This position can be also be responsible for educating the public in regards to hunting. John
Betsch pointed out that the term hunter/hunting frightens most people and they must be educated. Jeff Standish
added that the new part time position could attend Home Owner Association meetings and answer questions
regarding hunting on their properties. The individual in the new position would be the nucleus for our area.
Discussion followed regarding specifics to title and job description. The Committee voted unanimously in
favor of adding this position. Dave Dominy, Laura Klahre and Jeff Standish will address the Board at the
th
August 25 meeting with the committee’s decision.
Public Forum
– The committee discussed planning a public forum to help educate the public in regards to all
areas regarding the deer crisis in Southold town. Preferably before October 1, the opening day of the 2015/2016
hunting season. Dave, Laura and Jeff will ask the Board in regards to a forum. Dave Dominy thought a smaller
audience would be better than a forum with only one expert to present. Residents want deer gone and it was
agreed that we need to continue to educate.
Upcoming season
– The Town program has added a new 10 acre property in East Marion. As required by the
DEC only antlerless deer can be harvested the first two weeks of the season. Promoting the Town cooler esp
during this two week period will be beneficial. To promote the donation program a handout outlining the
1
program will be distributed with new hunting permits issued through the Town Clerks office. John Severini is
working with Wildlife Unlimited to provide hunters with a receipt for charitable donation on their tax returns
for donated deer. Details are being discussed. Laura suggested adding the tax deduction plan to the
committee’s 2015 goals.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
