Mattituck, New York, with Commissioners Jerome Zuhoski and Walter Sabat, present,
together with Treasurer,John Cushman, Secretary, Madeline Haas, Jim Cox, Sr. Labor
Crew Leader, Gail Faircloth, Gate Guard Attendant and Gail Wickham, Attorney for the
Park District. Absent: Gerard Goehringer, Chairman of Commissioners.
Also present was Mr. John Harrison asking about the lighting at Aldrich Lane,
Laurel. Soccer club has no money but they want to know what is going on with the
lighting situation. The Commissioners and Mr Harrison had a lengthy discussion
Commissioners stated that the lighting has to be completely redone and the budget does
not have the funds available at this time. There also was a discussion had about the
agreement with the soccer club regarding rules and regulations.
Also present were Robert Knapp, Russell Williams, Maulla Erguler, Richard
Zahra, Mr. Nicholas Deegan and another man came to ask for help at Veterans' Park on
Peconic Bay Boulevard in Mattituck Mr. Knapp and Mr.Williams reported an open
market with drugs going on at the park site and they wanted to know where to go for help
because they called the police and were told that they haven't any jurisdiction at the site
because it belongs to the Mattituck Park District. They were told by the Commissioners
that that statement is not correct because a letter had been sent to the Southold Town
Police at an earlier date regarding that statement, Another letter is to be written to the
Police Department asking for cooperation in this situation. Mr. Zahra reported cars
racing up and down Marlene Lane. He knew we could do nothing about that but he felt
something should be done about the cars raising into the parking lot so that any children
playing in the playground area are not in danger. The men thanked the Commissioners
for their time and left.
Mr. Andy McGowan and Erick Isso were present as representatives of Mattituck
Little League. Mr. McGowan came on very strong about what he wants done at the Little
League fields and about the Yacht Club ball field. The Commissioners explained the
situation with the Yacht Club field. He was told he could not bring the pitcher's mound
in toward home plate_or shorten the distances of the bases because the Women's Softball
League was going to be using the field for the summer season. Ms Chlanda who handles
the Women's League, spoke that they are going to have 3 teams and are tryng to get a 4th
team together. Commissioners suggested that if they cannot get another team together
perhaps she could contact the Greenport League about merging with them. She said she
had thought about doing that but is still hopeful for the chance of a 4th team. Mr.
McGowan said he expects to be in charge of the Mattituck Little League for 3 years and
wants something in writing as to what is going to be done for the Little League because
he just will not go through this situation each year. The Commissioners spoke with him
politely and explained our budget already has been set and approved by the taxpayers for
the 2003 year and some of his requests might be able to be accomplished. Mr. McGowan
was told there was room available outside the fence at the softball field where the Little
League could practice. Having calmed down, he quietly left. Ms. Chlanda thanked the
