Box 1179 Southold, New York 11971-0959 Fax (631) 765-1823 Telephone (631) 765-1889 OFFICE OF THE SUPERVISOR TOWN OF SOUTHOLD Economic Development Committee (EDC) Meeting Minutes August 24, 2015 Present: Steve Latham, John McLane, Rona Smith, John Stype, Carolyn Fahey, Tony Cocheo, Councilman Bill Ruland and Phillip Beltz. Excused: Sara Garretson, Donielle Cardinale and Supervisor Scott Russell. Meeting began at 2:00 p.m. Anne-Julia Audray and Olivier Chazareix: Discussion with owners of former Southold Methodist Church and their plans to develop an opera company. Constance McIver volunteered to assist their efforts. Significant repairs and renovations are necessary including replacement of the roof. Discussion of offering youth programs at the Peconic Lane Community Center that would be facilitated through the Town’s recreation program. Rona and Steve will meet with them to assess if the Local Development Corporation can provide financial assistance. Carolyn stated that opera could possibly qualify for tax abatements as a cultural arts institution, Phillip will consult with Planning. She also stated that assistance from key Town personnel are needed to expedite the process (similar to the “business liaison held by John Stype.) The Old Town Arts & Crafts Guild: Rona and John McLane have met with several members of their board and are assisting with the development of a one year strategic plan that includes not purchasing another site but renovating the current site. Development of Cultural Arts Consortium: Review of John McLane’s ideas for cultural arts consortium. After considerable discussion, agreement that the Town should not create a consortium but should create a “culture and arts committee.” The committee would function to promote the development of cultural and performing arts in the Town of Southold, to foster collaborations, develop events, etc. Committee could develop a “council” of members possibly with assistance of East End Arts. Phillip will research if other municipalities have similar committees and reach out to Pat Snyder. “How to Cultivate Your Food Business” Workshop: Karen Karp will attend the September th 14 meeting and EDC will discuss workshop details at next meeting. Topics will include access to capital, focus groups determining needs and resources, marketing and branding, legal, etc. th Planning 375 Anniversary Event for Businesses: of SubcommitteeCarolyn, Sara and Phillip met with Abigail Field and Joan Bischoff of North Fork Promotion Council –they have identified theme “Experience Southold, Then and Now” in early November that will bring history to the hamlet centers.
