Historic Preservation Commission Minutes
3:00 p.m., May 19, 2015
Town Hall Annex Executive Board Room
Attendees:
James Garretson, James Grathwohl, Robert Harper, Edward Webb, Don Feiler.
Call to Order:
The meeting was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Chairman James
Garretson.
Approval of Minutes:
The minutes of April 21, 2015 were approved unanimously.
Chairman’s Comments:
Chairman Garretson shared a letter he had written to the Orient
Association regarding the Commission’s role in protecting Orient Village’s Historic
District.
Old Business
150 Bay Water Avenue, Southold:
Commissioner Harper agreed to reach out to the property owner and the CDC to discuss
options following the CDC’s denial of funds to cover necessary repairs to this historic
structure.
Update on historic lighthouses:
Damon Rallis agreed to draft a letter that would be sent to the owners of Southold’s
offshore lighthouses, encouraging them to officially landmark the structures.
New Business
New additions to the Landmark Registry:
CommissionerGrathwohl asked commissioners to each compile a list of five properties
to be added to the town’s Landmark Registry, so that the commission could target those
properties for preservation.
Commissioner Webb said that there needed to be more incentives for people to add their
properties to the registry and agreed to reach out to Melanie Cirillo, of the Peconic Land
Trust, to discuss that organization’s preservation program. Damon Rallis suggested
adding her to the July 21 agenda at 3:15 p.m.
Historic Preservation Week:
The group reviewed Commissioner Grathwohl’s draft ad for the Historic Preservation
Week Series and made numerous comments and suggestions.
