Vice Chair Anne Surchin and commissioners continued the discussion of a proposed
awards program and explored other opportunities for awards, such as advocacy. It was
suggested that an ad be placed in the paper calling for nominations to the award program.
Historic Lighthouses:
Administrative Assistant Damon Rallis explained the commission’s next move in
protecting Southold’s offshore lighthouses would involve the need to address the town
board in a work session regarding recommended changes to the town code. Damon
agreed to contact the Supervisor’s Office to schedule the appointment.
Ben Franklin Mile Markers:
Zach Studenroth gave commissioners an update on plans to restore the historic Ben
Franklin Mile Markers in Southold Town. He said that although things looked positive,
there was still much planning to be done, including securing grant money, investigating
property/ownership issues and surveying all of the marker locations. Damon said he
would put Zach in touch with John Sepnoski who, he believed, had already surveyed the
markers.
Historic Churches/Floating Zone Legislation:
Commissioners briefly discussed the public hearing that was held regarding the floating
zone legislation and were confident that the law would be passed at the next scheduled
town board meeting.

the final stages of mapping the survey work done by the HPC’s intern and John Sep

series of workshops regarding historic preservation in Southold Town models on a

together some ideas and present them to the commission at an upcoming meeting and
expects to schedule the workshops for after Labor Day.
Universalist Church Fire, Southold:
Chairman Garretson discussed the tragic loss of
the historic First Universalist Church of Southold, a landmarked building. After some
