Landmark Preservation Commission Minutes
3:00 p.m., September 16, 2014
Town Hall Annex Executive Board Room

I. Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 3:00 p.m.
II. Approval of Minutes
A motion was made by Chairman Grathwohl to approve the minutes of September 9 and
seconded by Anne Surchin. The minutes were approved unanimously.
III. Chairman’s Comments
Chairman Grathwohl introduced George Cork Maul, of the Douglas Moore Foundation
and Zach Studenroth, or the Cutchogue/New Suffolk Historical Council.
Chairman Grathwohl discussed plans to create an advertising campaign to promote the
Landmarks Commission that would include newspaper ads, flyers, and posters to being in
the spring.
Commissioner Webb asked about the possibility of doing community presentations.
Chairman Grathwohl explained that he has a PowerPoint Presentation that he has used in
the past, but noted that it needs to be updated. Commissioner Webb agreed to help with
updating the presentation.
Commissioner Garretson suggested making a presentation to the East Marion Civic
Association because of the group’s interest in creating a historic district in East Marion.
IV. New Business
Chairman Grathwohl, Mr. Studenroth, and Mr. Maul updated the commission on projects
related to the 375 Anniversary of Southold Town.
Zak Studenroth gave commissioners an overview of the status of the Ben Franklin Mile
Marker restoration project. He noted that he is still seeking funds for the project.
Commissioners discussed “fundraising” or “sponsorship” as one way to raise funds for
the project. Chairman Grathwohl reminded the group that Scott Russell has committed
$10,000 of town money to help fund the project.
Chairman Grathwohl agreed to contact all of the local historical societies to coordinate a

partnership in the mile marker project and other projects related to the 375 anniversary.

Mr. Maul discussed plans to have a 375 anniversary postmark. He said that he had been
in touch with local postmasters and was coordinating the plan.
Zak Studenroth also updated the commission on restoration work at the Old Burying
Ground in Cutchogue.
Commissioner Webb continued recent discussions regarding the preservation of offshore
lighthouses and said that he would contact a member of the Board of Assessors to see
whether or not these properties are on the tax rolls and what jurisdiction, if any, the town
has over them.
V. Old Business
Commissioners made last minute preparations for the upcoming joint Riverhead/Southold
corridor informational meeting in Mattituck.
