Landmark Preservation Commission Minutes
3:00 p.m. April 15, 2014
Southold Town Hall Annex Conference Room
Attendees:
James Grathwohl, Gary Parker, James Garretson, Robert Harper, Anne Surchin,
and Donald Feiler
I. Call to Order: 3:00 PM
II. Chairman’s Remarks: Chairman Grathwohl discussed the updated SPLIA list and
Historic Corridors vs. Historic Districts. In addition, four ads in the Suffolk Times
regarding Landmarks and Landmarking buildings were proposed.
III. Pre-submission Conference: Gary O’Connor, Architect and owner Mr. Berault.
Three Orient neighbors were also present. Proposed relocation of existing historic carriage
house and attached “garage” at 95 Navy Street, Orient, Suffolk County Tax Map #1000-26-
1-12.2. The Commission recommends a public hearing.
IV. Pre-submission Conference: Mr. Charnews, Owner of 52180, Main Road, Southold,
Suffolk County Tax Map #1000-63-6-8. Mr. Charnews was asked to submit a site plan to
the Commission.
V. Discussion of the potential new Landmarks Commissioner, Pat Butler. The Board
would like to interview Ms. Butler at the next Board Meeting in May.
VI. Discussion of the SPLIA list update project. The Commission requests a
presentation of the project by Mark Tweedie.
VII. New Business: The Commission needs to develop a plan for endangered historic
buildings including churches.
The Commission will soon be confronted with the issue of solar panels on historic
structures and will need to be ahead of the curve with this technology.
