Call to Order & Approval of Minutes:
Meeting was called to order and minutes from the May 21, 2013 meeting passed unanimously.
Chairman’s Comments:
James Grathwohl discussed a number of ongoing projects including the preservation of Ben
Franklin mile markers, ideas for renewed public information efforts, and concerns regarding
Sacred Heart Church. Commissioners agreed to schedule a meeting with Supervisor Scott Russell
to discuss a number of preservation issues, particularly the future of the Sacred Heart Church site.
Meetings:
Richard Wines, chairman of the Riverhead Landmarks Commission, presented the commission
with an overview of a planned historic district on Route 25 (east of County Road 105) to the
Southold Town line. He explained that the Riverhead Town Board had pledged full support for
the plan, which offers incentives to property owners to maintain historic properties within the
corridor through state and federal tax credits. Mr. Wines explained that when the state surveyed
the proposed corridor, representatives had shown interest in extending it into Southold Town
(Laurel) and asked Southold’s commissioners for support. Commissioners liked the idea and
suggested possibly extending the corridor further.
Commissioners met with applicant Barbara Schnitzler for a pre-submission conference regarding
proposed additions and alterations to her home at 220 Old Harbor Road, New Suffolk. After
reviewing the proposed project, commissioners agreed to set a public hearing date for July 16,
2013.
Next Meeting: July 16, 2013 at 3 p.m. in the Town Hall Annex
