Landmark Preservation Commission Minutes
4:00 p.m., August 21, 2012
Town Hall Annex Executive Board Room
Attendees:
Jim Grathwohl, Larry Jungblut, Doug Constant, Donald Feiler, Damon Rallis.
Call to Order & Approval of Minutes:
Meeting was called to order and minutes from the June 19, 2012 meeting (no July meeting)
passed unanimously.
Chairman’s Comments:
A discussion was had regarding recent published news of the tear-down of the Douglas Moore
House in Cutchogue and the need to landmark properties in the Town of Southold. Jim Grathwohl
explained that the new owners of the Douglas Moore studio building, which is in bad shape, are
interested in preserving it.
Jim Grathwohl also discussed a meeting he had with the owners of Douglas Moore’s birthplace.
He says that they might want to preserve that property through Landmarks as well.
Jim Grathwohl noted that, with the public’s response to the loss of the Douglas Moore house, this
may be the perfect time for the commission to produce an infomercial in support of landmarks.
New Business:
Damon announced that landmark intern, Mark Tweedie, had completed his work for the year and
gave commissioners an overview of his work so far. He explained that they were hoping to bring
the intern back next year.
A resolution was passed unanimously to accept, with regrets, the resignation of Mel Phaff from
the Southold Town Landmarks Commission. Damon agreed to forward the information to the
Town Clerk’s office.
