12:00 P.M. in the Gymnasium at Fishers Island School
Present were: Chairperson: Arthur Leudesdorf, Members: Councilman Bob Ghosio, John Betsch, Ken
Reeves, Jeff Standish, Nancy Foote. Guest: Patricia Schneider representing East End Arts Council
Call to order:
Chairperson, Art Leudesdorf called the meeting to order at 12:00 pm. Below are
discussion items:
Cultural Activity at Peconic Community Center (PCC):
Pat Schneider presented to the committee the concept for having an ongoing art gallery on the walls
and in the theater of the PCC with artwork being supplied by East End Arts Council (EEAC). 90% of
the artwork would be in the hallway. Exhibits would be changed quarterly, featuring predominately
local artists from the Town of Southold. To accommodate the art and maintain the integrity of the
walls, it will be necessary to install a gallery hanging system and additional lighting at an approximate
cost of $5900. The EEAC does not have a slush fund for hardware and lighting and is requesting the
Town cover this cost. The quote is for materials only. Labor would be the responsibility of DPW.
Jeff Standish reported the walls & ceiling of the building are concrete. Pat will forward the quote for
specific lights and hanging system to Jeff who will investigate further how to install these items. Jeff
will also consult Tim Abrams, Town Electrician. In the theater, the stage area will not be used for art
work display, only the walls.
East End Arts Council was founded in 1972. Located in Riverhead, the organization represents the
entire east end. EEAC’s goal is to serve Riverhead and beyond. Satellite galleries include
Jamesport Manor Inn, Riverhead Town Hall and Greenport Theater. There are two, possibly three
artists featured at each venue. Artists who are selected need a quality body of work that is reviewed
by EEAC. Artwork is varied in style and suitable for public viewing. John Betsch asked if the artwork
can be purchased once on display. At Jamesport Manor Inn, Pat explained each piece of work has a
tab on the bottom corner with the artist’s name, name of the piece, medium and price. A similar ID tab
would be in place on the artwork displayed at PCC. An interested party would have to contact EEAC
for further information and details on how to purchase the piece. 70% of the purchase price goes to
the artist, 30% to EEAC however sales are limited. The venue host (TOS) does not involve itself with
the sale of the art. Benefit to the Town is the art on the wall. The committee will inform the Town
Board that the art displayed is for sale.
Art Leudesdorf questioned the issue of liability. Pat answered that the EEAC has a Certificate of
Insurance and the artists also carry insurance. John Betsch inquired if the EEAC has standard
agreements for the committee to review. Pat will forward this information to the committee. Art will
meet with Town Attorneys to review documents, determine Towns insurance requirement for this
1
project and get their feedback to present to the Town Board. EEAC can sign a Hold Harness
agreement with the Town as well.
Discussion of hours of showing was addressed. Ken Reeves would have the EEAC fill out the proper
paperwork for Use of Building and schedule times available for public to view the artwork. It would be
within the working hours of Town personnel. John Betsch asked if there would be outside signage,
but Pat answered that it has not been discussed as of yet.
EEAC would also like to offer occasional classes at PCC. The class participants would pay EEAC for
the workshop/class and EEAC would pay the instructor. Jeff Standish asked why it could not be done
within the Town’s Recreation programs. Pat thought if the Town wanted to offer the programs, then it
would be the Town’s program and not EEAC. The committee believes the offering of classes through
EEAC needs to be discussed with the Town Board further.
The committee voted unanimously to support the displaying of artwork at the PCC and will report to
the Town Board as such.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Foote
Committee Secretary
