Economic Development Committee (EDC) Meeting Minutes
July 29, 2015
Present:
Steve Latham, Sara Garretson, John McLane, Rona Smith, Donielle Cardinale, John
Stype, Carolyn Fahey, Supervisor Scott Russell and Phillip Beltz. Excused Tony Cocheo and
Councilman Bill Ruland Meeting began at 2:10 p.m.
The Old Town Arts & Crafts Guild:
Discussion with Gayle Wagner and Bob Kuhne, board
members. The organization is struggling financially and would like to move operations to the
former Methodist church in Cutchogue and sell their building for approximately $700,000. Sales
price of church is $1M leaving a gap of $300K. Several suggestions but primary need is
development of business plan and John and Rona volunteered to assist them.
Development of Cultural Arts Consortium:
Conversation with Old Town Arts & Crafts Guild
highlighted the need for the EDC to develop a “consortium” that would foster collaborations
between cultural arts organizations. This could be co-locating and sharing space and services,
Town purchase of physical site, etc. This will be discussed at the next meeting in which EDC
will bring bullet point ideas to share with colleagues. Anyone who finds a website that
articulates this concept can share with the committee (e.g.
www.artsconsortium.org )
Follow-up Food Tour SC Community Culinary and SBU EPCAL Incubator:
Agreement that
both organizations will be asked to participate in the upcoming food workshop.
“How to Cultivate Your Food Business” Workshop:
Agreement that workshop will be held
in November and next meeting will focus on content and speakers. Sara will invite Karen Karp
to attend. Topics will include access to capital, focus groups on determining needs and
resources, marketing and branding, legal concepts, etc.
Letter of Support: Heritage Tourism Initiative:
Sara reported that Oysterponds Historical
plan for the East End Coalition for History to
Society is seeking NYS grant funding to
expand heritage tourism in the region. Agreement to provide letter of support, Phillip
will write on behalf of the Supervisor for EDC.

Planning 375 Anniversary Event for Businesses:
Phillip met with Joan Bischoff of
North Fork Promotion Council to preliminary discuss planning event in September in
collaboration with the 375 Anniversary Committee to benefit local businesses. Tentative
theme “Taste and Experience Southold 375” with farmers markets at local historical
societies, museums, etc. As time is of the essence, subcommittee of Sara, Carolyn and
Donielle volunteered to assist Phillip and meet with NFPC.
EDC Opinion on Amendments to Aquaculture Uses:
There is a public hearing

scheduled for September 8 on amendments to chapter 219, Shellfish and other Marine
Resources in connection with Aquaculture. Rona will write a draft on behalf of EDC for
all to review and comment.
