STANDISH Town Hall DIRECTOR PO Box 1179 DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS Southold, NY 11971 Parks, Beaches and Recreation Committee MINUTES February 12, 2015 Meeting 6:30 P.M. in the Town Hall Conference Room Present were: Chairperson: Arthur Leudesdorf, Members: Councilman Bob Ghosio, John Betsch, Ken Reeves, Nancy Foote Call to order: Chairperson, Art Leudesdorf called the meeting to order at 6:30P.M. Below are discussion items: New Properties: Property owned by Bill Zebroski on Route 48 in Southold is being considered for purchase by the Town. The property would be specifically tagged for active use (ie: soccer groups). Councilman Ghosio will be attending a meeting this week with Land Preservation regarding the purchase. Items to be considered will be price, use, and maintenance of said property. Pickleball Court: Ken Reeves reported to the Committee that there has been some interest in developing a Pickleball program for the Town schedule. Pickleboard is a shortened court version of tennis. The tennis courts at Corcoran Park are being resurfaced this spring and Ken would like one of these courts to be lined for pickleball. Art Leudesdorf will address the Town Board in regards to this new program and the funds needed to line the specific court. It is too late to advertise Pickleball in the Town’s Spring insert/flyer but Ken thought if approved by the Board he could send out a blast email regarding the new program. Ken would also like to know when the courts are being resurfaced. He has been approached by the surrounding schools for use of these courts for their spring Tennis program. Flag Football: Ken has had some inquiries in regards to using the Football field at Corcoran Park for Flag Football. It would be an adult league and the team would like to use the field twice a week during the fall. Ken will invite Kevin Mahon to the next Park & Recreation meeting who will provide more information on this program. Other Business : The Committee discussed putting a report together to present to the Town Board on the usage of the Peconic Community Center. It was suggested that the building is underutilized. According to Ken most Town programs offered are income producing. John Betsch thought it may be advantageous to look into what other Township Recreation Departments offer. It could lend ideas to expanding the Town of Southold’s Recreation programs. It was also suggested that an Income and Expense report for the Recreation Department be published. The meeting was adjourned at 7:15 PM. The next meeting will be scheduled in March at a later date. Respectfully submitted, Nancy Foote Committee Secretary 1
