STANDISH Town Hall DIRECTOR PO Box 1179 DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS Southold, NY 11971 Parks, Beaches and Recreation Committee MINUTES May 14, 2015 Meeting 6:30 P.M. in the Town Hall Conference Room Present were: Chairperson: Arthur Leudesdorf, Members: Councilman Bob Ghosio, John Betsch, Ryan Case, Jeff Standish, Nancy Foote. Call to order: Chairperson, Art Leudesdorf called the meeting to order at 6:30P.M. Below are discussion items: Mission Statement : Mission statement was amended and adopted by the committee. The statement is as follows: “The Town of Southold Parks, Beaches and Recreation Committee advise the Town Board in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life for all residents of Southold by providing park, recreation and leisure opportunities through organized programs and well maintained parks, facilities, playgrounds and beaches.” Co Chair Assignments: At the request of the Town Board a co-chairperson was discussed. Members present were not interested in the position at this time.. The decision was tabled. Art Leudesdorf was nominated and voted in as the chairperson of the committee. Art accepted the appointment. Bike Racks: Bike racks were requested during the recent Town community meeting. Philip Beltz emailed the committee and asked that they review locations throughout the Town for bike rack installations. John Betsch reported one at Kenny’s Beach. Jeff Standish informed the committee that there were bike racks in storage for use in Greenport Village. This equipment was purchased through grant money. The committee discussed placing bike racks at Dean’s parking lot in Mattituck and at the beaches. The committee will ask the Town Board for funding through parks & playground money to purchase additional bike racks. Field Use – Jeff Standish reported on the soccer travel team (12-14 year olds) using Corcoran Park football field. To date there has not been a problem. The field was just fertilized and is holding up nicely. Strawberry Fields is growing well since the over seeding of the fields. The seed was donated by the Lion’s Club. John Betsch asked about the upgrade on the gravel road at this field, he thought it looked great. Jeff responded that crushed stone was dumped and graded. There was an issue with trucks getting stuck in the ruts when entering the property. This is another improvement made to the field at no cost to the Town. Pickleboard – At this time there will be no pickle board lines painted on the current tennis courts. It was suggested that the basketball courts (which are barely used) be lined with a pickle board court and see if there is interest in this sport. There were never “pro” pickle board participants at the Town 1 Board meeting requesting courts. During the resurfacing of the tennis courts at Corcoran Park, the pickle board lines will be installed on the basketball courts. Recreation Center News : The committee discussed scheduling of the Recreation Center and Peconic Community Center for better use of space and optimal use of each building. It was proposed that classes be scheduled with room configuration in mind to accommodate set up and break down of rooms. The committee reviewed the deposit guideline for groups other than Town sponsored programs. Presently deposits are taken for “outside” events and the committee believes that all events requiring use of a building need to pay a deposit to be held for clean-up not done (but is required) and damage to the facilities. Policy should also include facilities under “Special Events”. The buildings need constant inspection to assess for upkeep and damage. Discussion followed. Other Business : Committee members requested a set schedule for future meetings. It was agreed the third Thursday of each month there would be a meeting scheduled unless otherwise planned. Meeting was adjourned at 8:00 PM. Respectfully submitted, Nancy Foote Committee Secretary 2
