Box 1179 Southold, New York 11971 PRESENT: Cindy Smith, Christopher North, Jean LePre, Eleanor Lingo, Marjorie Day, Linda Ruland, LeroyHeyliger, Loretta Hatzel-Geraci, Valerie Shelby and Sonia Spar GUESTS: Louise Wilkinson(Southampton and Riverhead ABTF), Mary Louise Cohen(Islip Anti -Bias Task Force) Excused: Louise Hug Linda moves and Marjorie seconds the motion to approve the minutes with corrections. Jean and Eleanor will be on the picnic committee, but will not be chairing that committee this year. There is informative discussion re: "Student Ambassador Program" co-chaired by Louise and Rabbi Moss(Islip). There are 9 schools that participate. They are sophomore and Juniors that go to this work shop and then they bring their work idea back to their community to implement. This program got an award from the Human Rights Commission. The process is to send invitations to all schools in district. The first and last session are held at town hall The other two are at other locations (schools). Some things that have happened at their events are; having reps from minority community example —NAACP, Holocaust, brother of Marcelo Lucero) to talk about their experience. Youth enrichment services helped staff to organize the events. The used a poster event to try to change the language they use. Kids are selected by the high School S.W er. Optimal time is not close to the end off the school year and best during school day 9:30-12:45. The kids are bussed and lunch is provided (pizza, cookies and H2O). There is a video shown that the kids have created to send a message, A release signed might be a good idea. Lack of parent involvement is discussed and our thoughts seen to suggest sending a letter stating 'your child has been selected. We hope to have topics to draw the community. PTA's work closely with schools to design. They have an officer from the Hate Crimes Unit do a presentation. Another example given of work don was done during black history month.
