6. Notes: -Well maintained historic cemetery with several diagnostic early
colonial gravestone styles and raw materials (blue slate, red sandstone, etc).
Depicted below is Isaac Hubbard (left) and his wife Bethiah Hubbard (right);
left gravestone retains rare signature of stone cutter John Stevens III. John
Stevens III is the first major stonecutter to incorporate Neo-Classical
symbols, considered to be the most prolific and talented artisan from family
of Rhode Island gravestone cutters (1769-1789), and shifts the trend from
mortality symbols like Deaths Heads to more graceful images of angels with
Roman-like portraiture.
