Report by Joy Bear
July 19, 1985
In the period following the America Revolution, a surprisingly
large number of houses of similar style were built in Oyster Ponds,
both Upper and Lm'ler Necks. (Lovver Neck is nm'l East ~1ar ion.) They are
of the Georgia n tradition commonly called half-houses. Still surviving
are perhaps six in East Harion. Miss Ruth Schneider's home is one of
these. The house was built c. 1810 and enlarged c. 1850 by the addition
of another half-house on the east side. Local legend has it that the
original house was built by a sea captain for his bride. He was not
destined to enjoy his home for long, for he was lost at sea.
THE !'1IA IN ENTRY
The front door of the west wing dates to the building of the original
house, c. 1810. On the outside the door has raised panels with inserted
molding. Inside, the door is flat, with beading outlining the panels.
On either side of the fro nt door are decorative g lass lights. The
g lass is early, but t he lead tracery over it was appl ied c. 1900. The lock
on the door is fairly early, c. 1850, but the orig inal hinges have been
replaced. The, small front entry once included a stairway to the attic,
or sec ond floor. (See "Upsta irs Bedrooms.)
DINING ROOtvI
To the right (west) of the entry is a dining room with a fireplace and
china cabinet. The centerpiece of the room is the fireplace on its east
\~all. The mantel is heavily paneled a nd molded, a nd surrounds a shallow
Rumford fireplace with a country style, c. 1812 iron crane.
The 9/6 windows have wood panels bet~~een them and the baseboo.rcls. Thes
windows may have been full floor leng th \'Jhen the house l:.Jas built :i.n 1810,
and shortened and the paneling belC'.~ them added in the 1850 remodeling.
The baseboards seem to he ve been added c. 1890 1 s, a nd the chair rail in
the 1 920 's. To the nor t h of the fireplace are a china cabinet and under it
a storage closet. The beading on the wood mak in g the back of the china
cabinet shows that this c abine t was installed ":hen the house \;Jas built, 181
Floorboards in this room are randon width -nine to 14 inches, and date
to the orig ina l house. The dressed door leading from the entry to the
dining room is a 1940's replacement .

PARLOR
This east wing and its lean-to rear bedroom were added in the house
expansion of c. 1850. The batten door leading from the entry into the parlo ~
has iron, two-part lift hinges. Here the floorboards are even width ... the
big trees were disappearing from Long Island. The fireplace, mantel and
eared window surrounds are in the 1850 r s style. The ~I/indo~., .moldings D'--.J.--__
were a later addition.
SOUTH BEDROOIvf, Dm~TNSTAIRS
The wainscot and its beading on this wall show 1850 l s styling. The
glass in the 6/3 windmvs is probably of this time, but the floor is a
later installation, probably a repair.
KITCHEN
A fireplace, oven and ash pit dominate the north wall of the kitchen.
The oven is from the original house, c. 1810. A very old, hand-made wooden
oven cover with a hand-carved wood handle closes off the oven. The fireplac (
is shallow and decorative and has been built (probably in the 1850 ' s
updating of the house) to replace the original cooking fireplace, which by
tha t time may have been worn out by use. A cut in the mantel bebl/een the
fireplace and oven indicates where the newer fireplace begins.
The wainscot in the kitchen matches the wainscot in the adjoining
bedroom, and undoubtedly was applied in the 1850 update. A Dutch door,
leading out (north) to the back porch, dates from the 1 9 l1 0 ' s. This back
porch was entiTely enclosed at one time. The view over the handsomely
planted and cared for garden in the rear is r e warding. A staircase with ver:
narrow tre a ds is located on the Nest side of the kitchen, and leads upstair ~
The wall on the left side of the staircase is sheathed in horizontal
paneling, and ~ on the rig ht side with vertical paneling.
UPSTAIRS BEDROOMS
The stairway from the kitchen leads to three upstairs bedrooms. Expose <
rafters in the roof are vertically hand sawn, and appear to date to 1810.
All three bedrooms have plastered walls and early baseboards. The floor
boards are of uneven width and date from the early house. Moldings on the
upstairs doors are also c. 1810. ~~____
The ltJest bedroom is the largest G.nd has a fireplace (nml/ closed) with <
mantel that is a simplified version of the mantel in the dining room
dO'tJnstairs, just below it. Both date to c. 1810. 'J'l1l0 ~"indO\vs are in the \"es i
g able of this bedroom.
The east front bedroom is tiny. Its 6/3 'dindml/s have early, vlavy glass
panes. A batten d oor is cut dia g onally at the top .to fit the sloping roof.
The central chimney stack of the early house (an d the oven flue joining it)

are visible from this room. The chimney stack probably was used 'to
slightly heat the upstairs in olden days. It is covered with plaster
possibly a later day fire prevention effort. A door that leads from this ro
into the unfinished attic over the east wing shows butted rafters. The roo
of the east wing is felt to be consistant with the 1850 date of the
addition. The north bedroom is also very small. On the flqorboards of this
room are cuts showing where the original stairway of the 1810 house once
entered the attic.
