6. Notes: -Old Field Indian Village was likely one of the last large Native
American habitation settlements on the North Fork of Long Island; as colonial
documents refer to this and other areas of Southold as being active
agricultural villages of the Corchaug Tribe in the Early Seventeenth Century.
Despite extensive archaeological investigations in the Late Nineteenth to the
Mid-Twentieth Century, it is likely that archaeological deposits are extant
throughout the area. This interpretation is based on 2013 observation of
eroded slopes at the southeastern corner of the property, which revealed
surficial evidence of prehistoric artifacts like Grit-Tempered Prehistoric
Pottery and Quartz Stone Tools/Debitage (see images below).
