Indian Village, Indian Fort, and Hallock Site,

5. Evidence of Structural Modifications: -N/A.
6. Notes: -The Jagger Site, Five Acre Indian Village, and supposed Fort on
Gid’s Island were likely some of the last large Native American habitation
settlements on the North Fork of Long Island; as colonial documents refer to
this and other areas of Orient as being active villages of the Corchaug Tribe
in the Early Seventeenth Century. In addition, archaeological sites dating
back to at least 3,000 years B.P. (i.e., Browns Brothers/Hallock Sites) have
also been recorded. Despite extensive archaeological investigations and
surface collection in the Late Nineteenth to the Mid-Twentieth Century, it is
likely that archaeological deposits are extant throughout the area. This
interpretation is based on 2013 observation of exposed beaches along Narrow
River, which have revealed extensive surficial evidence of prehistoric
artifacts like Quartz Stone Tools/Debitage (see second image below).
