Economic Development Committee (EDC) Meeting Minutes
June 19, 2015
Present:
Steve Latham, Sara Garretson, John McLane, Rona Smith, Donielle Cardinale, Tony
Cocheo, John Stype, Carolyn Fahey, Councilman Bill Ruland, Supervisor Scott Russell and
Phillip Beltz. Meeting began at 1:05 p.m.
Business Development Workshops:
“How to Grow Businesses with Local Foods”-John Stype will coordinate EDC tour of SC
Community College Culinary program in Riverhead and EPCAL food production site in
Calverton. Both resources will be invited to speak at the future workshop. Other
possible speakers/resources are LI Farm Bureau, LI Wine Council, Cornell Cooperative
Extension, BOCES and Karp Resources. Suggestion to market to “Slow Foods”
distribution list. Workshop could also provide discussion of branding North Fork foods.
Access to Capital: Food, Beverage and Agricultural Enterprises:
Several EDC members
will attend conference - John McLane volunteered to take notes and share with everyone.
NYS Economic Development Regional Council Funding:
Carolyn Fahey discussed the
history of funding and consolidated funding application. It is very competitive and applicants
must submit funding requests that will provide significant economic impact for their region. In
addition she provided a handout of additional resources. Several ideas were discussed for
consideration for future funding request:
Co-packaging facility that several food producers could share
Slaughterhouse site
Assistance with developing start-up businesses (e.g. land-based aquaculture, etc.)

Planning 375 Anniversary Event for Businesses:
Agreement that Phillip will meet with
North Promotion Council in planning “Celebrate the Bounty of Southold” event in September. On

September 12 the 375 Anniversary Committee is planning tour of historic homes and this could
be excellent opportunity for collaboration.
Medical Marijuana:
Many businesses are vying for an opportunity to grow and produce medical
marijuana for the first round of NYS approval of operations. While there have been exploratory
inquiries, it is likely that Southold will need to address this request in the near future.
Discussion of 2015 Goals and Objectives for Implementation:
Off-season promotional activities such as American Express Small Business Saturday,
first Saturday Thanksgiving.
Host meeting of “Best Practices for Chambers of Commerce”
Other:
Supervisor Russell reported that an Opera company is seeking to move to the
Methodist church in Southold and an Art Guild is operating in Cutchogue. Both likely will need
assistance in establishing their businesses. He suggested inviting to the next EDC meeting, all
in favor.
