HomeMy WebLinkAbout05/18/2015 Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Minutes May 18, 2015 YB Present: Linda Ruland, Ryan Case, Andrea Nydegger, Robert Duffin, Jillian Ruroede, Cristina Excused: Witzke, Laura Held, Patricia Mellas, Councilman Bill Ruland and Phillip Beltz. Elaine White, Karen McLaughlin, Jeff Standish, Officer Bill Brewer and Councilman Jim Dinizio. Welcome to Linda Ruland and Ryan Case: New board members welcomed. Approval of Minutes The minutes of April 20, 2015 were approved. Family Service League-Crisis Intervention Training: It is very important that at least 20 residents/employees of the Town participate in the two-day training. Phillip requested Board to attend/identify individuals to participate. Youth Advisory Council (YAC) Environmental Initiative: Jillian and Phillip reported that YAC provided the Town Board with an extraordinary presentation of their short and long term environmental initiatives, including Earth Day activities. Bike Swap: This year 24 bicycles were donated of which 10 were swapped and 13 donated to CAST. Many residents appreciate the opportunity to donate/trade. Community Mapping 101 Training: Andrea discussed the community asset mapping training regarding identifying resources in the community to address needs of youth. There will be a series of meetings over the summer to work with stakeholders who serve/assist youth. Suffolk County Summer Works Employment Program: Phillip reported that the Town will again participate this year with six employment slots for income eligible high school students (reduced or free lunch.) Positions include assisting Highway, Dept. of Public Works, Town Clerk and Human Resource Center. He will interview students at their respective schools. YAC Membership: Phillip reported that several students will graduate next month and there will be vacancies. Ryan questioned what is the function and purpose of YAC. Patty suggested sending letter to schools soliciting student membership to highlight that it provides opportunities to develop and enhance people skills. Phillip said its greatest value is teaching civic engagement and civic responsibility. Summer Activities: The Youth Bureau will host Summer Movie Night in the Park that will be underwritten by NY Organ Donor Network. YAC will provide suggestions of movie titles. In addition, the North Fork Ospreys will sponsor “Youth Bureau Night” for their All-Star baseball game. 1 Other: Crissy stated that she updated Facebook page with information regarding Bike Swap. Phillip asked Ryan to also assist with social media/communication of Youth Bureau events. Next Meeting : Monday, June 15th at 5 p.m. at the Human Resource Center in Mattituck.--The board will further develop additional goals and objectives for 2015. Respectfully Submitted, Phillip Beltz 2
