Box 1179 Southold, New York 11971-0959 Fax (631) 765-1823 Telephone (631) 765-1889 OFFICE OF THE SUPERVISOR TOWN OF SOUTHOLD Economic Development Committee (EDC) Meeting Minutes May 15, 2015 Present: Sara Garretson, John McLane, Rona Smith, Donielle Cardinale, Tony Cocheo, John Excused/Absent: Stype, Councilman Bill Ruland, Supervisor Scott Russell and Phillip Beltz. Steve Latham and Carolyn Fahey. Meeting began at 1:15 p.m. Introductions: Welcome to new EDC members Sara Garretson and John McLane. Business Development Workshops: Phillip reported that the 2015 workshops have been very successful with approximately 25 attendees for “Growing Viticulture and Agriculture” and approximately 40 attendees for “Growing Commercial Fishing and Aquaculture.” Future workshop will include developing successful businesses from local food sources (how to brand food tourism/increase profitability, business and succession plans, accelerate businesses, etc.) John suggested EDC tour of EPCAL food production site and will set up prior to our next meeting. Other suggestions are to consider SC Community College in Riverhead as a resource along with LI Farm Bureau, LI Wine Council, Cornell Cooperative Extension and BOCES. Sara suggested inviting Karen Karp of Karp Resources to a future meeting. EDC will also sponsor workshop for entrepreneurs and inventors. As Peconic Landing is hosting seminars on non- profits EDC will forgo that topic. North Fork Promotion Council: NFPC will officially open their tourism booths for the summer th season on Wednesday, May 20 from 4 until 6 p.m. at booth in Laurel. In addition they have launched a website for the 375th Anniversary Committee. 375 Anniversary: There are a series of events planned throughout the year. EDC will develop a post-Labor Day event in collaboration with the 375 Committee to benefit local businesses. Discussion of 2015 Goals and Objectives for Implementation:  Off-season promotional activities such as American Express Small Business, first Saturday in December Other: Supervisor Russell suggested that the EDC vet new business models that are proposed and provide objective analysis whether these models are appropriate in the Town. Meeting adjourned 2:20 p.m. th Next Meeting: Friday, June 19 at 1:00 p.m. in the Supervisor’s Conference Room-Town Hall. Everyone is encouraged to re-read the Economic Development chapter of the Comprehensive Plan prior to next meeting to assist with developing 2015 goals/objectives.
