Stairways shall not be less than 36 inches (914 mm) in clean width at all points above the permitted handrail height and below the required headroom heighd. The greatest riser height within any flight of stain shall not exceed the smallest by more am 3/t inch (9.5 mm). R311.5.3.2 Tread depth. The minimum tread depth shall be 9 inches (229 min). The tread depth shall be measured horizontally between the vertical planes of the foremost projection of adjacent treads and at a right angle to the tread's leading edge. The greatest tread depth within any flight of stairs shall not exceed the smallest by more than 3/3 inch (9.5 tom). The greatest nosinlg projection shall not exceed the smallest nosing projection by more than 3/1 inch (9.5 mm) bletween two stories, including the nosing at the level of floors and landings. Beveling of noting shall not exceed 1/2 inch (12.7 men). 8isen shall be vertical or sloped from the underside of (the leading edge of the tread above at an angle not more than 30 (0.51 rad) degrees from the wertica . The opening between adjacent treads is not limited on stain with a total rise of 30 inches (762 mm) or less. 1311.5.4 Landings for stairway&. There shall be a floor or landing at the top and bottom of etch stairway. Exception: A floor or landing is not required at the top of an interior flight of stain, provided a door does not swing over the stain. A flight of stain shall not have a vertical rise gaster than 12 feet (3659 norm) between floor levels or landings. The width of each landing shall not be less than the stairway served Every landing shall have it minimum dimension of 36 inches (914 trim) measured in the direction of travel. 8311.5.5 Stairwey walling surface. The walking surface of treads and landings of stairways shall be sloped no steeper than one unit vertical in 4t inches horizontal (2 -percent alope). 8311.5.6 Handrails. Handrails shall be provided on at least one side of each continuous run of treads or flight with four or more risen. R311.5.6.1 Height Handrail height, measured vertically from the sloped plane adjoining the tread nosing, or finish surface of romp slope, shall be not less than 34 inches (964 mm) and not moa It hon 39 inches (965 mm). R311.5.6.2 Continuity. Handrails for stairways shall be continuous for the full length of the flight, from it point directly above the top riser of the flight to a point directly above lowest riser of the 'flight Handrail ends shall be returned or shall terminate in newel posts or safety terminals. Handruls adjacent to a wall shall have a space of not less than 11/2 inch (3 9 mm) between the wall and the handrails. Exceptions: 1. Handrails shall be permitted to be interrupted by a newel post at the turn. 2. The use of a volute, turnout, stating easing or starting newel shall be allowed over the lowest tread. R311.5.6.3 Handrail grip size- All required handrails ,half be of one of the following types or provide equivalent graspability. 1. Type L Handrails with a circular cross section shall have an outside diameter of at least 11/4 inches (32 mar) and not greater than 2 inches (51 mm). If the handrail is not circular it shall have a perimeter dimension of at least 4 inches (102 men) and not greater than 61/4 inches (160 mm) with a maximum cross section of dimension of 21/4 inches(57 mm). 2. Type 11. Handrails with a perimeter greater than 61/4 inches (160 mm) shall provide a graspable finger recess area on both sides of the profile. The finger recess shall begin within a distance of 3/4 inch (19 mm) measured vertically from the tallest portion of the profile and achieve a depth of at least 5/16 inch (t mm) within 7/9 inch (22 mm) below the widest portion of the profile. This required depth shall continue for at least 3/9 inch (10 MOO) to a level that is not less that 13/4 inches (45 mm) below the tallest portion of the profile. The minimum width of the handrail above the recess shall be 11/4 inches (32 mm) to a maximium of 23/4 inches (70 mm). Edges shall have a minimum radius of 0.01 inches (0.25 tem). R311.5.7 Illumination. All stairs shall be provided with illumination in tceordance with Section 8303.6. ;x8406 FOUNDATION WATERPROOFING AND DAMPPROOF ING IR1406.1 Concrete and masonry foundation dampproofing. Except where required to be waterproofed by IRR406.2, foundation walls that retain earth and enclose habitable or usable spaces located below grade shall be dampproofed from the top of the footing to the finished grade. Masonry walls shall have not fees than 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) portland cement puging applied to the exterior of the wall. The parting shall be dampproofed with a bituminous costing, 3 (rounds per square Yard (1.63 kg/a12) of acrylic modified cement, V9 -inch (3.2 non) coat of surface -bonding mortar complying with ASTM C IV or any material permitted for waterproofing in IRR406.2• Concrete walls shall be dompproofed by applying any one of the above listed dampproofing materials or any one of the waterproofing materiah listed in IRR406,2 to the exterior of the wall. IR1406.2 Concrete and masonry foundation waterproofing. In area where a high water table or other severe soil -water conditions are known to exist, exterior foundation walls that retain earth and enclose habitable or usable spaces located below grade shall be waterproofed with a membrane extending from the top of the footing to the finished trade. The membrane shall consist of 2 -ply hot -mopped felts, 55 pound (25 kg) roll roofing, 6 -mil (0.15 mm) polyvinyl chloride, 6 -mil (0.15 mm) polyethylene or 40 -mil (1 term) polymer -modified asphalt The joints in the membrane shall be lapped and sealed with an adhesive compatible with the waterproofing membrane. EXCEPTION: Organic solvent based products such as hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, ketorrs and esters shall not be used for ICF wells with expanded polystyrene form material. Plastic roofing cements, acrylic coatings, latex coatings, mortars and partings are permitted to be used to seal ICF walls. Cold setting asphalt or hot asphalt shall conform to type C of ASTM D 449. Hot asphalt shall be applied at a temperature of less than 200 degrees. IR8406.3 Dampproofing for wood foundations. Wood foundations enclosing habitable or usable spaces located below trade shall be dampproofed in accordance with IRR406.3.1 through IRR406.3.4. IRR406.3.1 Panel joint sealed. Plywood panel joints in the foundation walls shall be sealed full length with a caulking compound capable of producing a moistum-proof seal under the conditions of temperature and moisture content st which it will be applied and used. IRR406.3.2 Below Fade moisture barrier. A 6 -mil -thick (0.15 nun) polyethylene film shall be applied over the below -Fade portion of exterior foundation walls prior to backfilling. Joints in the polyethylene film shall be lapped 6 inches (152 mm) and sealed with adhesive. The top edge of the polyethylene film shall be bonded to the sheathing to form a seal. Film areas at grade level shall be protected from mechanical damage and exposure by a pressure preservatively treated lumber or plywood strip attached to the wall several inches above finish grade level and extending approximately 9 inches (229 trim) below grade. The joint between the strip and the wall shall be caulked frill length prior to fostening the strip to the wall. Other coverings appropriate to the architectural treatment may also be used. The polyethylene film shall extend down to the bottom of the wood footing plate but shelf not overlap or extend into the gravel or crushed stone footing. IRR406.3.3 Porous fill. The space between the excavation and the foundation wall shall be backfilled with the suit material used for footings, up to a height of 1 foot (305 ruin) above the footing for well - drained sites, or one-half the total beck'fill height for poorly drained sites. The porous fill shall be covered with strips of 30 -pound (13.6 kg) asphalt paper or 6 -mil (0.15 men) polyethylene to permit water seepage while avoiding infiltration of fine soils. IRR406.3.4 Backfill. The remainder of the excavated area shall be backfrllcd with the same type of soil as was removed during the excavation.
