Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Minutes
April 20, 2015
YB Present:
Robert Duffin, Jillian Ruroede, Cristina Witzke, Karen McLaughlin, Patricia Mellas,
Excused:
Councilman Bill Ruland and Phillip Beltz. Elaine White, Jeff Standish, Laura Held,
Andrea Nydegger, Officer Bill Brewer and Councilman Jim Dinizio.
Approval of Minutes
The minutes of March 23, 2015 were approved.
Family Service League (FSL) Trainings:
FSL met with the Town Board to
discuss a series of trainings that were approved by the Board. The first training
will be 14 hour International Critical Incident Stress Foundation training on June

9 and 10. The Youth Bureau will offer 5 scholarships for organizations unable to
pay. The Youth Bureau board agreed that other trainings (Safe Talk and
Children’s Emotional Well Being) should be conducted in the fall of 2015.
Community Mapping 101 Training:
Several openings for The East End
Partnership for Youth training with Dr. Carolyn Peabody of Stony Brook University
regarding identifying resources in the community to address needs of youth.
Job Corps Presentation:
Five attendees for “Alternatives to College” workshop.
Job Fair
: Ten employers registered to participate, however only six attended Fair.
There were 23 attendees, primarily youth. Phillip thanked Laura Held for her
assistance.
Volunteer Forum:
Fourteen service organizations participated with 16 attendees.
Phillip thanked Bob Duffin for his assistance.
Youth Advisory Council (YAC) Update:
Approximately 12 students will meet
with the Town Board to discuss Earth Day and other environmental initiatives.
Jillian explained that Greenport students selected the DVD “Marion Lake Story”
regarding phragmites removal due to its local relevance. Patty stated this could tie
in with Southold’s recent campaign to rank most pressing problems.
Youth Bureau Board Membership:
Phillip reported that several residents have
expressed an interest to join the board and the Town Board will authorize
appointments with a resolution in the near future.

Bike Swap:
Scheduled for Saturday, May 16 - 10 a.m. until noon at the
Recreation Center. Jeff volunteered to help Phillip and leftover bikes will be
donated to CAST. Country Time Cycle will also participate with safety instruction.
North Fork Alliance-
Flyer distributed regarding Cornell Cooperative workshops.

Suffolk County Cyber-bullying Campaign:
Due to very limited participation of
st
students throughout the County, the deadline has been extended to May 1 for
students (elementary, middle school and high school) to submit posters.
Suffolk County Summer Works Program:
The Dept. of Labor of SC will offer
municipalities funding to participate in the summer employment program.
Intergenerational Activities:
Karen reported that Greenport High School
students have identified a prototype of planter boxes and will provide them.
Southold elementary students are finalizing the tablet instruction classes with
seniors, this has been very successful
Next Meeting
: Monday, May 18th at 5 p.m. at the Peconic Lane Community
Center in Peconic (next to Recreation Center.) As new membership is anticipated,
the board will develop additional goals and objectives for 2015.
