Box 1179 Southold, New York 11971-0959 Fax (631) 765-1823 Telephone (631) 765-1889 SOUTHOLD TOWN ANTI -BIAS TASK FORCE MINUTES/ DECEMBER 15, 2015 RECEIVED JAN 8 2015 Southold Town Clerk PRESENT: Eleanor Lingo, Mike Domino, Leroy Heyliger, Valerie Shelby, Sonia Spar, Jean Le Pre, Cindy Smith, Carolyn Peabody, Bill Ruland, Susan Dingle Guest Philip Beltz There is a motion to approve the minutes with correctionsl. Mr Smith is the Assistant Principal of Mattituck High School. 2. The three projects for implementing programs in collaboration with ABTF and school districts are: a( meetings and educational forums, b) engage elementary children in creative art projects and display c) 30 second spotlights/smartboard/ public announcements. SCHOOL REPORTS: Southold; There are serious concerns re: definition of material incidents being 0 in Southold. Mike supplies the definition of Material incident and or harassment. Common Core is policy. Dignity Act is the law. Sonia has written a letter with our concerns re: the lack of clarity of knowing this definition as well as lack of hiring minorities. We are hopeful for maintaining and continuing dialogue and hope that schools that are not present will be apart of future discussions. Can the ABTF have a bi-annual conversation with schools to see how they are implementing the Dignity Act? Mattituck- no one was able to attend. Their meetings are held on the 3`d Thursday . Jan 15 is the next meeting. Greenport -Sonia and Cindy will try to coordinate attendance. Carolyn will look into Orient School Bd meeting schedule. MLK CELEBRATION- WILL BE January 18, 2015.at the Orient Congregational Church at 4pm. Dr McGhee from the First Baptist Church of Bridgehampton will be the speaker. Theme is Remember!Celebrate!n Act! Kings legacy of courage for our world. Meeting planned Dec22 at Ebenezer Deli. All are welcome. POLICE- Philip will speak with the Supervisor and the town board re: ADL offer to do a free training for police. There was a gang forum and at that time the chief had reported that Southold now has a spanish speaking officer. They are planning a forum to open up communication between police and the community. Sonia will be the rep for the ABTF to be a part of the conversations. We need to address community involvement on the advisory board of the police dept. The newspaper Suffolk Times "Nephew Affect" Mike contacted Michael White who will be more involved with ABTF. NEW BUSINESS 1.Philip has organized mandatory training for town employees. They worked with EAP re: Cultural Diversity cultural awareness . It will be a 1 hour training. This training will be held the first quarter of 2015. Also on January 19, 2015 2. Southold will hold it's first MLK day of service. There will be various projects through out town to be involved with community service on t hat day such as; CAST —rehab the pantry/food drive. , adopt a platoon write letters to soldiers, Mattituck Presbyterian Church/Johns Place (cell phone recycling), Cutchogue Cemetary(painting a garage and post), Cutchogue school will help coloring placemats for seniors, clothing drive for homeless in Yaphank., NF animal Welfare League/pet food drive. The Clinton Memorial will have a dinner and would like help serving. Val will do 50 bags of toiletries. There will be a station at the rec center to collect the toiletries. 3. Sonia will coordinate with the town to help develop a specific training for police through the Anti - Defamation League. Ny has the largest # of hate crimes int eh country. 35% of those who committed crimes are under 18. 4. Val motions to develop a committee to take ABTF minutes. Sonia seconds all are in favor. Cindy, Sonia and Carolyn will rotate and Susan will be a consultant. 5. Change of dates for Jan and Feb meetings due to holidays. Jan will be Jan 12 and Feb will be Feb9. 6. Fishers Island correspondence/letter of thanks is read for donated books from ABTF. 7. Suggestion is made for ABTF to so a survey. Suffolk Times will be requested to sponsor. This will be to implement positive change in town through letters to the newspaper editor. ABTF will do outreach to the community -to include computer users and non users. Bill Ruland suggests economic development committee of town has information about what works. Data is more important than who supplied the informantion.. 8. Susan reads a poem she wrote and it is decided she will sign her name as a resident rather than member of ABTF. 9. there will be a committee to develop a "honor a community person ". (Val,. Loretta, Marjorie, Susan,Jean and Leroy. 10 Black History month —We will have a part in Peconic Landing Celebration. 11. Town of Southold - March will post vacancies for expiring terms. This is an ideal time to think of people to fill these openings. Bill Ruland will be our Rep from the town. 12. non denominational read in of 7 denominations? 13. Importance of ABTF to respond to newspaper articles which pertain to our concerns. 14 At our next meeting can we have a conversation re: being more empathic as public servants to holiday celebrations. 12:00 Val motions to adjourn.
