• October Is Ami -Bullying month and people wear blue every Monday.
• There is a proposal that the Anti -Defamation League will train law enforcement (free of charge).
There can be flexibility with two days at different times.
• Question is raised to the Supv. about how people are hired off of the civil Service for Police
Dept. Supv Russell report that recruitment is based on test scores from a list. Open Civil Service
examinations are open right now for police officers. The application is several months before
the exam, Classified positions are based on civil service exam. A person can call civil service and
get notice of when tests take place. Suffolk county college in Brentwood used to offer a class to
help prepare for test.
• The ABTF needs to focus on gangs and public anger toward the Hispanic community (especially
undocumented)_. How do we help our community have this conversation to not target the
entire community due to issues.
• LeRoy brings to note that Helen Prince ,teacher in labor camps was acknowleged for work in
Southold Town form 1949- 1962). We discuss the possibility of honoring her at the MLK
celebration or Black History month. Is there a family member alive to do this? In fact a motion
was made by Sonja and seconded by Mike to establish a tradition to honor a member of our
community who has established respect for our town and It's diversity each year. 2 epople will
work on establishing guidelines. All are in favor.
• The committee has concerns about the number of senior citizens being hit by cars in Southold
Town. We also need to think about how to help the disabled. Possible solutions mentioned are
a blinking light, and having a ABTF member meet with town transportation commissioner.
• Bicycle traffic is dangerous. Reflectors? Bridgehampton National Bank used to have a program
to give protective clothing — Does it still exist? Sonja would like to include this information when
we educate the community . Maybe we can use $ fro MLK offering? Maybe we can work
collectively with other organizations CAST/NF Parish Outreach?
