Palencia, and Loretta Hatzel-Gerachi

There is a motion to accept the minutes as corrected . A suggestion is made that names must be correct
for the minutes
SCHOOLS:
Southold: ABTF representatives brought the books to be donated from proceeds of our Martin Luther
King Celebration.
Greenport: A thank you is received from Greenport School for the donation of MLK purchased books.
Mattituck: Books donated from MLK proceeds are received from Board with thanks. TheABTF helped
to facilitate recognition of Jim McKenna with a plaque at a board meeting. Several member s were
present for the dedication.
POLICE:
Question is raised as to whether or not an ABTF member could become a member of the police advisory
committee? We would like to help them to activate a the board in a manner which includes bias
incidents (or perceptions ) in the community. Sonja introduces an incident where teens scared an
elderly woman in the Mattituck mall parking lot. Police were insensitive by asking what color was the
perpetrator. Cindy an d Loretta will follow up with Police. It is noted that Suffolk County has no
jurisdiction in Southold Town. We would like to address the need for a camera at the PD. There is also a
need/request for an officer to be present at ABTF meetings.
ERASE RACISM:
We have registered 22people to attend the conference which will be held June 30 -July 1, 2014.
PICNIC:
There will be planning meetings taking place at 9:30 every Wednesday morning at the Ebeneezer Deli
(formerly Mikes), until the picnic takes place on August 9 at Strawberry Fields in Mattituck from noon -
4:00 pm. Eleanor has put in the poster to be printed. Sonja is doing the letters to business, Merle will
review and Eli will pick up. Sonja will speak to the radio and newspaper re: advertising the event. There
is discussion to tape off an area to make the event more handicapped accessible.
NEW BUSINESS:
Members are involved in discussion related to outreach to suggest having a meeting with the Latino
community to address the issue " Is there anything in your life that feels biased?" The potential for a
forum in the libraries to have the ABTF host the event is suggested. Sonja is willing to contact Sister
Margaret and the libraries for potential date of September for Mattituck and Greenport. Then, another
in November for Southold and Cutchogue.
NEXT BUSINESS MEETING WILL BEAT TOWN HALL ON JULY 21, 2014 AT 10 AM.
Respectfully Submitted,
Cynthia A Smith
