HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/23/2015 Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Minutes March 23, 2015 YB Present: , Jeff Standish, Andrea Nydegger, Laura Held, Cristina Witzke, Karen McLaughlin, Elaine White, Sarah Benjamin, Patricia Mellas, Councilman Bill Ruland and Phillip Beltz. Excused: Robert Duffin, Jillian Ruroede, Officer Bill Brewer and Councilman Jim Dinizio. Approval of Minutes The minutes of February 23, 2015 were approved. Family Service League (FSL) Training Series: Finalized details of FSL training to be sponsored by the Youth Bureau, there will be a discussion with the Town th Board and FSL on April 7.  Community Crisis Action Team training (2 full days) at cost of $135 per person to be held at Town facility. Will be offered to Town employees (Human Resource Center, Police, and Emergency Mgt.) as well as school district employees, human service agencies, fire departments, faith-based communities, therapists, etc. Suggestion to offer scholarships (no more than 5 for agencies that cannot afford cost.)  Safe Talk, 2 hour training that is offered through New York State Office of Mental Health, FSL can offer the training but cannot provide certification credits. This is targeted towards identifying youth at risk of suicide, etc. Training is valuable for non-clinical providers, parents and older youth, possibly Youth Advisory Council.  Children’s Emotional Well Being is two hour training for parents, schools and teachers to learn about early identification and intervention of emotional problems. Karen stated that Eastern Long Island Hospital offers similar training. Community Mapping 101 Training: The East End Partnership for Youth will offer a ½ day training facilitated by Dr. Carolyn Peabody of Stony Brook University regarding identifying resources in the community to address the needs of youth. th Scheduled for Friday, April 24. Phillip will send out invitations. Job Corps: Educational workshop “Alternatives to College” to be presented th Tuesday, April 16 at 6 p.m. in the Town Hall meeting room. th Job Fair : Scheduled for Saturday, April 18 at 10:00 a.m. in Recreation Center. Laura Held volunteered to help. th Community Service Forum: Scheduled for Saturday, April 18 at 10:00 a.m. in the Peconic Lane Community Center. Once again Bob Duffin has volunteered to assist. 1 Youth Advisory Council (YAC) Update: Students to finalize Earth Day (April nd 22) environmental initiatives. Laurie and Karen reported that dinner for homeless guests for John’s Place (Mattituck Presbyterian church) was successful. Youth Bureau Board Membership: Phillip acknowledged Sarah Benjamin’s service on the board, Linda Ruland, Executive Director of CAST will join the board in April. Other: Andrea queried if Suffolk County will offer summer employment through the Town for income-eligible youth as she has students interested in participating. Phillip will inquire. th Next Meeting : Monday, April 20 at 5 p.m. at the Human Resource Center, Mattituck.
