Donid Kempster September 21, 1971 SPECIFICATIONS FOR HOPPER SPREADER INTENT The intent of this specifications is to describe a dump body mounted gasoline engine driven, hopper type spreader suitable for spreading sand, salt, cinders, calcium chloride or a mixture of these materials. It shall be designed to operate under all weather conditions. All materials or parts not specifically mentioned herein shall be consistent with the best practice of the highway j spreader industry and be supplied. SPREAD APPLICATIONS The spreader conveyor shall be driven by a 25:1 reduction and spread CC grade rock salt which weighs 78# per cubic foot with a minimum gate opening of 1-7/8" in the following amounts from idle engine to maximum governed R.P.M. : 15 MPH truck speed - 224# to 1580# to the mile 20 MPH truck speed - 168# to 1185# to the mile ENGINE The spreader shall be powered by a Wisconsin Model TJD-2 cylinder, four cycle, air cooled engine, producing 18 H.P. at 3200 RPM. The engine shall be mounted on the left rear corner of the spreader. It shall be supplied with electric starter, alternator, battery, oil bath air cleaner, pressure oil system and automatic choke. Controls for operation of the spreader shall be attached to a panel and mounted convenient to the driver. The gas tank shall have a minimum capacity of * gallons. A 16 gauge steel shroud shall cover the engine on three sties to protect the engine from rain and material spillage. Access panels shall be supplied to allow work on the engine and filling the gas tank without complete removal of the steel shroud. The engine mounting housing shall be removable and made of reinforced steel angle and bolted to the hopper. The engine shall be placed in the housing so that it draws air from the front of the hopper. DIMENSIONS The principal dimensions shall conform to those listed below: Area 10 foot spreader Overall length 12'2" Overall height (less hinged screen) 48" Hopper length (inside) 10' Hopper width (inside) 6'6" Capacity 6 - 6J yard Conveyor opening 14" Weight (minimus) 2350# HOPPER The hopper shall be of all welded construction of 10 gauge minimum of at least C. .18/ .23,MN. .301 .60, P. .040, S. . 050 steel and the sides shall be continuous welded to the front and back plate. The sides shall have a 400 slope and shall be supported by 8 - 4 each side - formed steel leg braces of no less than 10 gauge steel. The conveyor chain links shall be protected by cover plates running the full length of the inside of the hopper. The gate height of the spreader shall be adjustable by means of a screw type jack with the handle on the right side of the spreader. The top of the hopper must be channel formed for strength and NA -2- 9 rigidity. The main frame rails shall be one piece full length with cross bracing and unitized welded construction. A 7 gauge minimum wear plate shall be supplied for the drag chain to slide on. CONVEYOR The conveyor chain shall be a 2" pitch with maximum overall width of 18". The rollers shall be 5/8" outside diameter operating over 7/16" diamter hardened pins case hardened to point .006 deep. Chain shall be of the roller type construction for easy servicing, using stainless steel cotter pins. It shall have a minimum strength of 20,000 pounds. The cross members shall be placed on 4" centers . and must be a minimum of 3/8" x 111. The drive sprockets shall be anti-buildup, minor diameter, 7 tootn cast steel spaced on 16" centers. A chain wiper of flexible belting shall be bolted to the discharge end of the spreader to clean the cross members. To allow for normal chain wear, a spring loaded fully enclosed chain tightener shall be supplied with at least 4" of adjustment available. The springs shall be 2-3/8" diameter with 7/16" diameter wire with load capability of 1200 pounds. The front idler shaft shall be 1020 cold roll steel 1 " in diameter drilled and tapped each end for grease fittings. The chain tightener adjusting bolts ` shall be 1" diameter minimum and be easily accessible. The conveyor drive shaft shall be operated through a fully enclosed and lubricated. worm gear type reduction unit. This unit shall have a reduction ratioiof 25:1 ands" centers on the gears with taper bearings throughout. The main drive shaft shall be 11" diameter full length with self-aligning bearing opposite the gear box. A chain drive from the engine reduction assembly shall power the conveyor gear box. DISCHARGE CHUTE A suitable 10 gauge steel discharge chute shall be supplied to direct the flow of material onto the distributor disc so that the material spread pattern can be changed to suit operating needs. The complete chute and spinner disc distributor assembly shall be of the bolt in type to be easily removed for storage of the spreader. The chute area shall have no obstructions or shafts internally. The spread patterns shall vary from 10' on the right to 30' on the left, or by changing the chute adjustment baffle 10' on the left to 30' on the right. Four (4) adjustable deflector plates and brackets shall be supplied for left, right, front and rear side of the spinner assembly. BUMPER Straight side bar type to protect chute and spinner. i _ DISTRIBUTOR The material distributor shall be 20" in diameter rotating in a horizontal plane. It shall be supplied with eight (8) 10 gauge thick fins and must be adjustable for height. The distributor disc shall be driven from a 1" diameter shaft with self-aligning bearing, exterior to the chute to a right angle gear box attached to the material chute. A chain drive to the right angle gear box shall come directly from the engine reduction clutch assembly. All chain drives shall be adequately covered with metal shields. -3- HINGED SCREENS The four— 74 —section hinged screen shall be of 3/81' diameter wire with 2-3/4" square openings welded to a bar frame, each section shall rotate around a 4" pipe which shall run the full length of the hopper. Pin type hinges will not be acceptable due to rusting conditions. CONVEYOR BRIDGE An inverted "V" type conveyor bridge shall be placed inside the hopper and so located to keep material weight from the chain yet not impede material flow to the drag chain. RUBBER BELT & SIDE SEALERS A 2 ply 4ly rated belt shall be securely fastened to the conveyor chain assembly. A 2 ply 1/" thick rubber side seal belt shall be bolted to each side of the hopper. ELECTRIC ENGINE CONTROLS The clutch shall be electrically operated vacuum unit pushbutton from the cab to stop and start the spreading operation. The throttle shall be electrically operated from the cab and shall be variable from idle speed to maximum governed speed and be of the screw out type. CHAIN OILER A chain oiler shall be supplied and mounted to the front frame of the spreader to drop oil on the chain during the spreader operation.
