The Southold Town Board, at its regular meeting held on February 24, 2015, granted
permission to the 375`h Anniversary Committee to hold a "Mile Marker" Day on May 16,
2015. A certified copy of the resolution is enclosed. This event is a Town event and is
covered under the Town insurance policy. Please be sure to contact Captain Kruszeski, at
the Police Department, 765-2600, as soon as possible, to coordinate traffic control.

ADOPTED AT THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE SOUTHOLD TOWN BOARD ON
FEBRUARY 24,2015:
RESOLVED that the Town Board of the Town of Southold hereby grants permission to the
Southold town 375th Anniversary Committee to hold a Mile Marker Day on May 16, 2015 from
Laurel to Orient from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, provided they adhere to the Town of Southold Policy
for Special Events on Town Properties and Roads. As this is a Town sponsored event all fees are
waived.

Fees:
$250 for events with less than 1000 expected attendees
$350 for events with 1000 or more expected attendees
$250 or more Clean-up deposit (Cannot be Waived)
NOTE: Additional deposit may be required (see attached regulations) and shall be made in an amount
determined prior to issuance of the permit based upon the estimated direct costs attributable to additional
police, highway and cleanup costs associated with the event. The deposit will be used to cover such costs
and any unused monies will be returned to applicant.
CERTIFICATE OF INSURANCE REQUIRED: Not less than $2,000,000 naming the Town of
Southold as an additional insured.
Additional information and requirements may be required as deemed necessary by the Town Board.

Milemarker Day
May 16th 2015
An event in which the public is encouraged to take a trip visiting each Benjamin Franklin Mile Marker.
A Scavenger Hunt style, "Mile Marker Crawl" in which events are staged at selected Mile Markers.
The event should start at 9am at Milemarker#7 in Laurel so that markers are on the same side of the
street as cars pulling over. (number #25 and #28 are on the left side but easily accessible)
Event Scenario/Outline:
A yard sign on Route 25 by Franklinville Rd in Laurel would say "Turn here for Milemarker Day"
Pulling over to the side of the road, participants are greeted by a volunteer who hands them a Marker
Kit and gives verbal instructions. (allow 2hrs to complete trip, event ends at 5pm)
Starting at Laurel, members of the public are given a list of things to do along the way to Orient relating
to the markers.
The Marker kit would consist of a Brochure, and Instructions, such as "set your odometer to zero" and
"How to conduct your march safely and responsibly." Kit will include simple clues or riddles that aid in
the search along the way.
When the people get to the last Mile Marker, They receive their prize/reward.
The post card that they have received at Marker #17 would be postmarked with the stamp that Dan
McCarthy has arranged by someone dressed up as The First Postmaster General, Ben Franklin
When they are at Marker # 17 they are directed to the Southold Historical to see and/or buy the
Milestones book by Robert P. Long or the book that Geoff is working on, or any other promotional
items.
Instructions:
Stop at the laurel marker Marker #7
Pick up your marker kit from representative (volunteer) Ask any questions. Pay Fee.
Proceed out to route 25, make a left and travel one mile to where the second Marker #8 would be.
As you drive by, answer the question:
What do you see on the side of the road when your odometer indicates one mile?
Clue: It's red
Write that information on the card.
Proceed one more mile to next Marker #9.
Pull safely to the side of the road. Answer the question "what is behind the Milemarker"?
Clue: Good make good neighbors.

#16 Snack at Triangle Park.
#17 Cellist playing on the Manse by Southold Presbyterian Church, pick up your post card.
#30 Postmaster General Ben Franklin Stamps your post card.
Other MileMarkers might be the location of simple events.
Any of the above events could be used to sell 375 Anniversary promotional items.
Karen Lund at OH may be setting up events where the school walks to some markers in Orient/East
Marion.

I have no objections to this event taking place as long as the motorist pay attention to any no parking restrictions in
the area of these mile markers and don't inhibit the flow of traffic. There should be no cost incurred by our department
for this event.
