EVENT DESCRIPTION Dinner in the Vines is an event designed to promote and educate the public as to the sheer abundance of local agricultural products available on the East End of Long Island. Local Chefs, Erik Orlowski & John Urbinati, create a seasonal menu featuring local ingredients and paired with Lenz wine. We then literally place the people in the middle of the farm where the grapes that made the wine they are drinking with dinner are grown. We have chosen a portion of the field that is far enough away from the main road and away from other buildings to further insulate them from everything but the land from whiphlic&IMED comes. 6010aa JUL I q 2013 EDUCATIONAL ELEMENTS OF THE EVENT BOARD OF APPEALS ■ Vineyard Tour focuses on changes in vineyard practices over the years, things we have learned through collaboration with other vineyard managers and Alice Wise, trellis systems, sustainable vs. organic farming practices, basic terminology (veraison, spur pruning, etc), and the dance that happens each harvest between the vineyard manager who wants to bring the crop in and the winemaker who wants to have the grape hang just a little bit longer. ■ So much focus is placed on the winery part of our identity that it is often overlooked that we are a FARM winery. This event literally places the guests within the context of their food and wine. ■ Ingredients for the dinner are sourced from local farms, fisheries, poultry farms, etc. ■ Seasonal Menu — in general people have no idea what is available seasonally. With supermarkets and refrigerated trucks we think nothing of having strawberries in December. Seasonal is the ultimate example of what it means to be a locavore! IMPACT TO PROPERTY The event is designed to have a very limited impact on the property: ■ For parking, we use our neighbor's field — Otto Kiel, owner — field just adjacent to the west of our property. ■ Guests walk along the tractor paths, not in between the vines. ■ Table is set up in the clearing between vineyard blocks ■ Table is one long continuous farm -style table — idea is to mimic a picnic ■ Small kitchen area is set up in another small clearing alongside the tractor path. PO BOX 28 PECONIC, NY 11958 631.734.6010 • EVENT SCHEDULE 5:30pm: Guests arrive at The Lenz Winery and are served a glass of the Lenz Cuv6e (sparkling wine). 6:00pm: Sam McCullough, Lenz Vineyard Manager, takes the guests on a tour of the vineyard which ends at the dinner site. 6:30pm: Dinner begins. Courses and Wines presented by Chefs Erik Orlowski & John Urbinati, and Winemaker Eric Fry. 8:30pm: Guests return to the Lenz Tasting Room for some Aldo's Coffee (local coffee roaster) to end the evening. I plan to attend the July meeting and would be happy to answer any other questions you may have. to f as l RECEIVED JUL 19 2013 BOARD OF APPEALS PO BOX 28 PECONIC, NY 11958 631.734.6010 • • ACOROe CERTIFICATE OF LIABILITY INSURANCE DATE 0711100/!22013013 ) THIS CERTIFICATE 18 ISSUED AS A MATTER OF INFORMATION ONLY AND CONFERS NO RIGHTS UPON THE CERTIFICATE HOLDER. (Lenz Winery) c/o Dorothy Dean Thomas for a special event (Dinner in the Vines) to take place August 24`h (rain date Oct. 5), on the County PDR parcel SCTM# 1000-8500-0200-017.002, which is directly adjacent (on the northern and western boundaries) to the parcel, SCTM# 1000-08500-0200-017001, that is the subject of the Merlot Classic Application,. The Dinner in the Vines application will be considered by the Farmland Committee tomorrow, July 23rd at 6:00pm (see the attached map of the two parcels and the attached proposed site plan for Dinner in the Vines). Therefore, it is necessary that the activities associated with the Merlot Classic event do not encroach onto the County PDR parcel (lot 17.2). Additionally the parking for both events is proposed for the field, owned by a neighbor, to the west of the Lenz Winery parcels. I could not discern from the Merlot Classic application by what path vehicles will be directed to the parking field, but they should not use the winery entrance and drive across the PDR lot (17.2) to access the parking field; instead, vehicles should be directed to access the parking field in such a way that they do not drive on the PDR parcel.
