Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Minutes
February 23, 2015
YB Present:
Jillian Ruroede, Karen McLaughlin, Robert Duffin, Elaine White, Sarah Benjamin,
Patricia Mellas, Councilman Bill Ruland and Phillip Beltz. Special Guests: Dr. Larry Weiss and
Excused:
Robyn Berger-Gaston, Family Service League Jeff Standish, Andrea Nydegger, Laura
Held, Cristina Witzke, Officer Bill Brewer and Councilman Jim Dinizio.
Approval of Minutes
The minutes of January 12, 2015 were approved.
Family Service League (FSL):
Dr. Weiss and Ms. Berger-Gaston discussed several
training opportunities offered by Family Service League that will be sponsored by the
Youth Bureau upon agreement by the Town Board. They are as follows:
Two day training on Crisis Response that is tailored towards mental health
professionals, primarily for individuals with Master’s degrees. The maximum
number to train would be 30 (school counselors, Town social workers, etc.) There
is a cost for training materials (books, etc.) and provision of lunch, coffee, etc.
Safe Talk, 3 hour training that is offered through New York State Office of Mental
Health. , FSL can offer the training but cannot provide certification credits. This is
targeted towards identifying youth at risk of suicide, etc. Training is valuable for
non-clinical providers, parents and older youth
Children’s Emotional Well Being is two hour training for parents, schools and
teachers to learn about early identification and intervention of emotional problems.
Suffolk County Anti-Bullying Campaign:
Once again the County will offer prizes to
students in elementary, middle and high schools who create anti-bullying posters.

Youth Advisory Council (YAC) Update:
Students are developing Earth Day (April 22)
environmental initiatives with Dr. Mel Morris of Brookhaven National Laboratories.

On Thursday, March 12 YAC will make and serve dinner for John’s Place (Mattituck
Presbyterian church.) Dinner preparation will begin at 4 p.m. at the Human Resource
Center and it will be delivered at 5:30 to the church and served around 6 p.m. . . .Youth
Bureau board members who wish to volunteer should contact Phillip.
Update on 2015 Goals for Implementation
:
New York Organ Donor Network offered to underwrite the Family Movie Night in
the Park in the summer
Job Corps will provide training to parents and youth regarding their program as an
alternative to college. This will be the only workshop offered in spring (teen dating
and violence workshop as well as the safe driving education will be offered
another time of the year.)

Karen reported that 5 grade students from Southold Elementary school are
providing instruction to seniors about use of tablets at the Human Resource
Center

Youth Bureau Board Membership Re-appointments:
Two year terms expire for the
following board members: Sarah, Bill, Karen, Andrea, Jillian, Jeff and Elaine. Inform
Phillip if you wish Town Board consideration for re-appointment,
Next Meeting
: Monday, March 23rd @ 5 p.m. at Peconic Lane Community Center in
Room #3.
