HomeMy WebLinkAbout01/12/2015 Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Minutes January 12, 2015 YB Present: Jillian Ruroede, Andrea Nydegger, Sarah Benjamin, Patricia Mellas, Jeff Standish, Councilman Bill Ruland and Phillip Beltz. Special Guest: Dr. Larry Weiss, Family Service Excused: League Karen McLaughlin, Robert Duffin, Elaine White, Laura Held, Cristina Witzke, Officer Bill Brewer and Councilman Jim Dinizio. Approval of Minutes The minutes of December 15, 2014 were approved. Dr. Larry Weiss, Family Service League (FSL): Dr. Weiss discussed the “South Fork Initiative” that was created in response to several suicides. Funding support from Senator LaValle, Assemblyman Thiele, Legislator Schneiderman, the Towns of East Hampton and Southampton as well as local school districts. FSL also successfully acquired grants from private foundations. Initially FSL increased treatment slots with dedicated social workers and psychiatrists, including telepsychiatry. In addition, prevention services of “family resource centers” for the Springs School District were added to strengthen families through psycho-education and resources and later speakers were available to the entire community and screenings of children ages 5 to 18. FSL has developed a “train the trainer” Community Crisis Action Team that provides two 7 hour days of training of how to identify possible suicides and response to trauma. This can be for anyone who is interested in being part of a team to work together to provide community-based screening and intervention. There is also a “Safe Talk” 3 hour workshop for working with adolescents who may be in harm for suicide. Agreement by board that Family Service League could offer train the trainer in the Spring. Phillip will arrange discussion with Town Board and it can be offered in Town facility. Several YB members would like to participate; this would also be offered to some Town employees, fire districts, school districts, human service providers, etc. Board would also like to replicate the South Fork initiative and contact Senator LaValle and Assemblyman Palumbo later in the year, after the training is offered. Request also for FSL to provide an educational workshop to parents on mental health and suicide prevention. Youth Advisory Council Update: Students will meet with Dr. Mel Morris of Brookhaven National Laboratories to develop Earth Day initiatives. Update on 2015 Goals for Implementation : th  Dr. MLK Day of Service-Scheduled for January 19.  Job Fair and Community Service Day-Scheduled for April 18, 2015 th  Bike Swap-Scheduled for May 16 and Country Time Cycle will participate. The Recreation Center Spring 2015 bulletin will feature notices regarding the job fair/community service forum and bike swap.
